I've used electric bikes since 2017. If you are in the market, you quickly learn about proprietary batteries and motors. In the fast changing ebike market, cheap ebike manufacturers never seem to be around for long and name brands charge truly incredible and outrageus markups. The alternative: buy a stock battery & bafang motor on the web to install on a high end bike. you get more battery, bike, and motor than for a 3times more expensive name brand. The problem: do you have the knowledge to put it all together, can you service it, what if you run into nagging issues. I was totally amazed and grateful to find Alkibike&Board for all those problems. The very humble service was incredibly knowledgeable, did not do an overbearing sales song/dance like the name brand outlets in Seattle and provided a simple solution to my ebike needs. Julian expertly advised me on the RIGHT bike to buy (sturdiness, size, break quality) and then he installed both Bafang motor & battery in no time. This shop lives its passion and does what they say they do: he delivered quality build on time with an amazing ebike that is exactly tailored to my needs. Before you buy an bike or especially ebike, do yourself a favor and just talk to Julian first, there is no sales pressure only passion for bikes and quality products with absolutely zero pain when stuff needs to be adjusted to your own needs. I have been to so many other places in Seattle where finding/booking service was a problem, fixes took forever, solutions did not exist period, were Julien makes stuff happen with ease. All that for a totally fair price. I love have found such a store combining passion and ability! Its the kind of store you walk out with a spring in your step for having found EXACTLY what you needed.

I took my mountain bike to them to get a full service tune up. When I dropped it off the staff was nice and friendly and I left feeling like my bike would be in good hands. I picked up my bike and on the first ride i knew something was very wrong. I asked them to fix my front break which was rubbing really bad. It was not fixed. I also asked them to work on my problem with going into first gear, my bike still would not shift at all. I also had them replace a tube in my rear tire. I called them and they said to bring my bike back in which I did. The man working there told me that my bike still wouldn't shift because I didn't know how to shift my bike properly. He also told me that it was normal to have breaks rub. I am not by any means an inexperienced mountain biker and I know that these problems are able to be fixed. I tried nicely explaining to him that I brought my bike in for service which was not completed. He was very snooty with me and continued to talk down to me. I left before getting even more upset. After dealing with my unfixed bike I went on another fairly moderate ride. Not long into the ride my rear tire popped and completely deflated. I took the tube out myself this time to replace it and they put the WRONG SIZE TUBE IN MY BIKE. Unbelievable!!!! After all I have gone through with them. It isn't so much about wasting my money there to have my bike tuned up but more about the incredible way that I was disrespected when I brought my bike back in to have it looked at. Whatever you do, don't bring your bike in for service unless you want your next ride to be miserable!

I recently purchased an electric bike kit (Bafang BBS02) for my mountain bike at Alki Bike and Board. It took me over a year to make the leap to an ebike, and I'm so glad that I did. My only regret is not having done it sooner, as it is RIDICULOUSLY FUN to ride an ebike! Having hit middle age, and acquiring some health issues along the way, it was hard to keep riding my bike regularly, especially on the "tired" days. Since transforming my bike to electric, I am riding more now than I have in a decade, including commuting to work. I look forward to riding every day now, knowing that I won't be a sweaty, tired mess when I arrive at my job. I can put as much or as little effort into cycling, depending on my energy level. Stu, the owner, and his son Julian, are my official bike gurus, having answered the dozens of questions I had about ebike kits. They are both polite, super knowledgeable, and very passionate about bicycles. All the good reviews here are well earned. They offer an excellent warranty on their ebike kits, and follow through on the after care. I had a minor issue, which they addressed promptly, and without any complaint. Not only did I make the right decision to get an ebike, I also found the right place to install it. Lastly, I called several shops about kit installation, and Alki Bike and Board had the best prices, by a lot.

A great, versatile bike shop. I've spent thousands of dollars here in the last year and I really feel like I've gotten more than my money's worth back in products and quality of service. Pros: - Great service! Always friendly, listening, knowledgeable and helpful. - Good selection of bicycles for sale. - Performs quality work. - Reasonable prices. - Forthcoming about costs, won't try to nickle and dime you or get you to pay for something that should be covered by warranty. I never felt like I was paying for something that I shouldn't. - Local, small business. Support your community! Neutral: - Can be a bit stressful when really busy. But in my experience you'll always be seen and taken care of either way. Cons: - Not the most organized store in the world. If you bring your bike in for service or repairs I suggest putting a note on it listing everything you want done or looked at. There have been times when I got a bike back after taking it in and they hadn't done everything I asked them to when I brought it in. Please note that this is an exception though, they usually perform very well. Conclusion: Highly recommended both for purchasing a bike and for servicing and repairs.

Just picked up my commuter bike today after getting the full-on tuneup. Could not be happier with the quality of the service, and the way cool spirit of the staff. Note to West Seattleites: Spend your money here! This is a W-SEA institution, been in our neighboorhood a long, long time. Great products and great people. Adding an update to my earlier review. Recently I showed up to Alki Bike and Board with an emergency as they were getting ready to close. I had promised to do the Iron Horse trail the next day with my brother, but had neglected to research the fact that no one was renting mountain bikes during the pandemic. I was able to borrow an old bike from a friend, but it needed a little tune-up before I could trust it on 30 miles of downhill, off-road riding. Julian took sympathy on my plight and told me to go ahead and bring the bike in. 20 minutes later, I had a bike that was lubed, adjusted, and otherwise made ready for the adventure. And what they charged me was a deal indeed. Alki Bike and Board rocks! Great W-Sea institution! Spend your local money there. Keep these guys in bizness for a long time to come!

Seriously the best! Newer to West Seattle and haven’t had need of a bike shop yet, but I found my place. Super patient as I weighed my options. Was on the hunt for an e-bike, but I did not like the frames, power, weight, etc. Came in to Alki bike and board to check out their e-bike conversion and got it all! The reasoning behind converting an existing bike is sound and I literally got the frame and style I was wanting with all the bells and whistles. Dream bike! They handled it all at the shop with ease and friendliness. Very informative, patient and gave space when I was unsure. Thought ahead for my Thule Yepp seat, even asked me to bring it to install before I left with my bike. This bike is gorgeous and has the power and endurance to get around West Seattle with my daughter en tote. Plenty of Range! Thank you so much Alki BnB, especially Dayton!

My review is not about renting a bike from Alki Bike, but buying one. We were just passing through Seattle on a very long drive but were interested in seeing an e-bike that they had in stock. We dropped by to see the bike and possibly test-ride it. The owner, Stu, could not have been more helpful and obliging, in spite of being interrupted by a constant stream of customers, to whom he was also very helpful. He set up two e-bikes for my wife and me and we went out for a long test ride. My wife loved the bike so much that we bought it on the spot. Stu and his 'wrench' worked for an hour or so on getting the bike perfect so we could take it with us. I've dealt with lots of local bike shops in several different cities, but I've never found a friendlier or more helpful one! Highly recommended.

The front, right pedal on my Raleigh mountain bike had fused to the crank arm (it has been on since 1992). After nearly destroying the bike trying to remove the pedal, I took it to Alki Bike and Board to get some help. Alas, the pedal was permanently stuck. However, they replaced the entire front crank assembly for just $40! To be clear, we're talking about spending 24-hours with my bike trying to get my pedal off + a SRAM front crank assembly + installation for just $40. I think they also fixed the bent front derailleur just because that was a cool thing to do. I'm a huge DIY guy and generally expect to get ripped off by Seattle stores. Alki Bike and Board reminded me of the value of a local bike shop that cares about their craft and does the right thing for their customers. Thanks!

It was one year ago today that two touring cyclists found themselves thousands of miles from home, on the side of a Seattle bike way, with a bike trailer that had snapped it's frame after striking a curb. In our most dire moment up rides Stu from Alki Bike & Board to offer us assistance. After getting to his shop we are given a corner of the mechanics work area to swap some frame rails around and get us on our way. No pressure. No expensive repair options. We were so grateful for a place to quietly fix our trailer with tools and support. We ended up buying a replacement trailer from the shop, just in case our repair failed (it didn't), & had it shipped to our home. Thanks guys for helping us out! Friendship like yours is a gift. The best service I've ever had at a bike shop. Actually, among the best service I've ever had period! I popped into Alki Bike and Board at lunchtime on a Saturday to have a new fork and stem fitted to my bike. I was hoping they could get it done for me by Monday morning so I could take it with me when I went on a trip. Instead, they did it on the spot! Stu did an excellent job - miles better than I could have done if I'd spent money on some extra tools. He's methodical and precise. The guys were helpful and friendly, and I had a great conversation. And I was out in 45 minutes with a new fork and a new stem fitted! You can't ask for better than that. This is now my local bike shop for sure!!

Probably the best bike and e bike shop in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Why? ... customer service! The owner, Stuart and staff, treat customers like old friends, taking time to inform, educate, and explain. The Alki Bike and Board Shop philosophy: "We don't sell bikes; we're here to educate about bikes; the bikes will sell themselves". My wife and I came in to look for an e bike. We learned more about performance, maintenance and design of the various bikes and motors in one hour from Stuart than we had in the three previous days visiting a half a dozen other shops. It made it easy to make an informed purchase decision. Happy to give Alki Bke and Board our highest recommendation.

Was visiting Seattle earlier this month and very much looking forward to exploring the city on a bicycle. After some confusion at a different shop, the wonderful folks at this shop saved me from a less lovely trip! This was no small feat considering I am very tall, but they matched me to an appropriately sized bike with less than 24 hours notice and had it waiting for me the next day when I arrived. Also, the daily bicycle rental rate was very reasonable. Super grateful to these folks and highly recommend this business to anyone in need of some fun on two wheels!

  • Mary Juliano

This place is great. I pretty much destroyed my old bike and rolled in there to assess the damage. All three people working there were all excellent, but especially Chris. I’m generally very socially anxious but I felt very comfortable asking all my questions, discussing my options, and felt very taken care of by knowledgeable, friendly, competent, trustworthy Chris. They definitely were not trying to up sell me on anything, and even in times of covid had a pretty good inventory of choices.

  • Sean Mccarthy

A real old fashioned friendly bike shop with an experienced knowledgeable staff committed to you buying the bike that’s best suited for you. Most importantly, they will be there when you need your bike serviced, upgraded, replaced or anything else. Their commitment is to safety, quality, affordability, customer service and community stewardship. They stand out as the best of the best and are cherished by residents of West Seattle. A true community treasure.

I love going to Alki Bike & Board for a water bottle or a tube. But I once brought a tandem in there to be tuned up. They adjusted the rear derailleur with the back wheel in crooked. CROOKED. So, when my wife and I arrived at our destination, I had to do the work all over again. Sigh. Still, I score them 'average' because the staff are VERY friendly, accessible and very good to my kids. Definitely a great place for your every-day cycling needs.

  • Curtis Allan

We bought a midsized bicycle here for our son for Christmas. We live farther south but the bike shop in White Center focuses solely on very high end prices at an uncomfortable service level for the less than dedicated. Alki Bike & Board is a friendly local business that has a wide range of options for all types of people. They are a great local business for anyone with bicycle needs in the West Seattle area.

  • Paul Loeb

Totally five stars. Great people, helpful, knowledgeable, creative. Also dedicated to bikes as a serious transportation alternative. I bought my electric bike five years ago from Electric Bikes Northwest in Ballard before Alki started stocking them (they're also great folks), but I take it to Alki for service, and they're wonderful. Even figured out a reasonable way to increase my gear range.

  • Conner House

The Alki Bike and Board team are the best! I had an issue with my bike that I anticipated costing quite a bit of money to resolve. They were able to fix it in a regular tune up, which I needed anyway. Im certain any other bike shop would have charged me extra for fixing the issue, but they lumped it into the tune up. This is a great local shop that you should definitely support.

  • MLP photography

My experience has been very positive each time I've done business with them. Staff are always exceptionally outgoing, courteous, and helpful. I am relatively new to West Seattle, and new to cycling. Every time I've left, I am more confident and knowledgeable; They seem to really personally care about offering quality service and not about just making money.

  • Alan Orthmann

I haven't bought much at this shop, but have stopped by several times for repair and maintenance. Their mechanics are quick, helpful, and honest. I couldn't get my pedals off at home, so I dropped by and they pulled them and put on my new ones for no charge. Will definitely continue to use Alki Bike and Board for basic maintenance that I can't do at home.

  • Heather Bond

Did a great job with my safety tune up and found that the reason I had been noticing some rattling noises was bc the bike store that had installed my fenders hadnt attached it at all the places necessary on my frame. I also really appreciated they didnt try to upsell me on getting a full tune up but I will definitively be back when I need one.

  • Miranda Taylor

I get all my bikes fixed up at Alki Bike and Board. I have new bikes assembled here. I mostly buy used bikes, selling one on consignment. Good, down-to-earth, chill and friendly service. The only thing that would make it better would be to add a little nook to have tea and watch all the nice people working, coming and going.

  • Colleen Royer

Dayton was amazing this Memorial Day weekend setting myself and my husband up with new bikes and gear! He listened to what we wanted and had recommended bikes ready. The shop set everything up before we left to make our first rides easy. The shop was busy and still customer service was friendly and attentive. Thank you!

  • Cinda Stenger

AWESOME customer service A++++. Came in w/ my disabled friend's walker, the great guy in the shop just said "give me 10 mins" boom- done and delivered, and wouldn't accept a payment! Now that's a stellar small business, that's generosity and love of the customer. And that's why I love West Seattle!

  • Dawaune Lamont Hayes

A friend recommended I stop by here after acquiring a flat and in need of new tires. I brought my bike in, a mechanic presented me options with his suggestions, and arranged everything by price. In the end it only took 30 minutes and my bike is up and running. Great place, value, and selection.

  • Riley Kestner

The techs here who work on the bikes are top tier. And every time you bring your bike in, it'll always come out riding better. However, the price points for the work are really steep, not to discredit the quality of work, but sheesh man. I bought a BMX from this place once upon a time for $400.

  • brummy bob

Looking for a bike shop that is both honest and pleasant to deal with, then this is the one. They gave me a quote for work on my bike and when the work went over what they had anticipated they still charged me the original quote, Amazing in these times. they are now my bike shop of choice.

  • Dennis Purcell

Bought my bike at this family run business back in 2003 after buying my first mountain bike from them back in the late 80’s. Just got a tune up and the bike feels like new. Issue came up with the brakes and the team took care of it. Julian and his staff are top notch.

  • silas kahl

Love this place! I've been to tons of bike shops spaning four states and most of the time i feel that I know more about their bikes than they do! With here though I always leave in a better mood then i was when I came in even if I didn't buy anything that day!

  • JulieLynn Olufson-Eckel

We rented bikes for a day from this shop. Amazing customer service, adjusted our bikes to specifically fit each of us, gave us bike helmets and bike locks to use with our bikes. We will return here again and again with our out of state guests.

  • Kacee Saturay

Awesome service even on the busiest, sunny days. I just went in and got my brake pads replaced and handlebars installed within an hour. The team is SO friendly and just all around awesome customer service. Coming back again next time!

  • Jayme Barry

Julien and team were so great in helping me find the right bike rack for our needs and then so prompt with assembly and install and a little lesson to boot! Friendly, prompt and simply a great group on hand at Alki Bike and Board.

  • Luke Smaul

I went in for some tubeless rim tape for an off-size wheel and for the same price as a roll of tape they hooked me up from their own stash and fitted it while I waited. Sometimes you just can’t beat the local bike shop experience!

  • Erik Moorhouse

My experience there's been phenomenal! I cannot say enough about these guys that would be worthy. Actually willing to jump out of their skin to help you. I've had them tune my bike up and have had no problems since! FIVE STARS

  • Raquel Asencio

I hardly ever review places but this place is wonderful. The people are super cool, they clearly are very knowledgeable and helpful and always do wonderful work. It’s surprisingly affordable too. Love this place.

  • Brandon Fayer

Great bike shop, good selection on cargo and e-bikes. I bought a electric kit online recently and they helped me through some complications. Super knowledgeable and honest staff. I definitely recommend this shop.

  • Zack

Stu is the best! Everyone's friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to chat with you. Most importantly, all the employees have cool bikes. Don't trust a bike shop whose employees ride boring, factory stock bikes.

  • Shirley Lindberg

What a great place! Super staff, phenomenal service, all with a smile! Couldn't be happier, they just did a service on my e-bike. We previously had them update our original bikes with pedal assist. Fantastic!

  • Momoko Miyafuji

Wow. Knowledgeable and super friendly. The people in general and Wyatt in particular obviously not only know their stuff but genuinely enjoy their trade. Six stars (even though we can only give 5). Bravo.

  • Matthew Apostolides

Julian was incredibly attentive and progressive in helping me source a bike box with no advance notice. You can tell these folks really care about bikes and run a well organized operation! Thanks again!

  • Kelly Clowers

Alki Bike and Board is always great, they are helpful and knowledgeable, with a good selection. For bikes, they focus on alloy bikes rather than Al or carbon. Especially recommend for the granola set

  • Joshua Curwen

I came in with a busted tire and left with a fixed tire, fixed breaks, adjusted handle bars... I paid for the price of the inter tube. Haha it was also raining that day, these people are heros!

  • Toon West

Staff are helpful and friendly. I take my bike there all the time, and they recognize me every time (probably because I have brought my bike in for repairs so many times). :)
