TL;DR VR headset movie theatre, while sitting in your fixed high school desk chair without the back-popping capabilities, and being forced to watch ______, on your phone, 6 inches in front of you. Just going to state that this was my first and possibly last IMAX experience. Went to go see The Batman at 2 pm. Arrive 10 minutes early and we are told we must get what snacks we need due to the theatre doors being locked at 2. OK. Go grab snacks and run back. Sadly... there was only bottled water and astronaut ice cream cakes. Odd but OK. Take my 21 bucks for 2 waters and 2 cakes. Rush back and find a seat. Found one but it hurts the neck due to no reclining seats and center focal point being a good bit higher than traditional theatres. Found another up top and it's marginally better. Halfway through and shooting pains through my legs from having an inch of space and that's with me stretching them into the aisle (I'm 5'11, 175 lbs). I couldn't imagine sitting through a movie while being in the middle of a group, although the image quality would hopefully be better. Having maybe 4k in the center of the screen... it quickly degraded in quality consistently everywhere else. Don't know if the movie was made for IMAX, but it definitely didn't seem so with edges being cut off. How can a theater show this movie and be pleased with what they are presenting? The whole experience was just abysmal. Astronaut cake was the best thing. I can't even give a rating on the movie; I couldn't focus due to discomfort. Will watch it again once it's released...

Went to see 'Oppenheimer' there tonight and I regret spending my money there to see that film for the first time. Would recommend going to see it at a normal AMC or Regal Imax theatre. This theatre has no business broadcasting films like this at the venue. The footage was stretched and it just looked awful altogether. I had to turn my head several times to look at disproportionately stretched faces on both sides of the screen. I was sitting about 5 seats in from middle left side. Screening started at 6pm and they didn't open the doors into the cinema until 15 minutes beforehand. On their website it says doors open 20 minutes beforehand. The show was sold out and there were no previews before the film started. Just a 5 minute introduction explaining why this is the most advanced cinematic experience available. Not a venue to see films at more of a planetarium. Again, they have no business broadcasting this film at their venue. You will have a far better experience seeing normal films at normal Regal or AMC Imax theatre.

I always look forward to an IMAX experience and have had several amazing ones. This one, however, is not up there for me and probably won't be one to attend a movie at again 1. Be aware of watching a 6 PM showing. Make sure you're fed and well hydrated. There are no concessions of ANY kind, no water other than some meager water fountains located near restrooms. To pay $22/ticket and have this sort of "amenity" is astonishing. 2. Seats are rather uncomfortable. Watching MI: Dead Reckoning" which was extremely zoomed in that I couldn't help look to see if the actors' nose hairs were trimmed. Or to examine how much make-up appeared on their shirt collars. I mean, you had no choice, given how zoomed in the experience was. You'll get a headache, eye strain at the least, plus dealing with a rumbling stomach or dry mouth 3. Don't worry about paying for parking. They let you in and out after 5 PM 4. Barely had any air circulating. I mean if it was Avatar length, forget it, you'd be in for a world of hurt.

Two major issues that left me frustrated and I still haven't been able to enjoy the show... First - I spent countless times trying to buy tickets for Superdogs online. Every time I made it to the end I received an error. I tried on a phone, windows PC, Macbook and all the same issue. I kept getting notifications to call to make the purchase but I was in and out of meetings for days and only had the chance to try when IMAX was closed. Secondly - when we finally were able to make our purchase, we took our son to IMAX to watch the show and were told IMAX hasn't been working all day! No email, no phone call, no sign at the door - nothing. I was told the only thing that could be done was to give me complimentary tickets for the tickets I already paid for...

My first (and last) IMAX Dome movie. Very disappointed. Just saw "Dunkirk" - probably a great movie, but a terrible viewing experience. Imagine watching a movie from the perspective of an ant, peering through a fish-eye lens and sitting way, way too close to the screen. You're basically lying on your back, craning your neck to look up and around just to figure out what's going on in each scene. Everything was terribly distorted. I'd like to see Dunkirk again on a "traditional" screen, but this was just annoying. I wanted to get up and leave after 10 minutes but decided to give it a chance. $16 tickets - not worth it, IMHO.

DO NOT GO TO IMAX at Discovery Place. Just saw Star Wars - The Last Jedi and I should have asked for my money back! The image was so dark that at times I couldn't see characters' faces. The "center channel" audio was so low I could barely make out the dialog. I never heard any surround sound channels effects, and the LFEs were non-existent. Plus, the dome changed the perspective--straight lines were bent of course. There was very little saturation--instead of bright colors, the colors were muted to "Earth" browns of the 70s. STONE CREST at PIPER GLEN is 10x better for IMAX!!! It was WORSE than a standard movie!!!

The staff were friendly, faculty was super clean, and the sound was awesome. However. I saw Jaws here, my favorite movie, and it was... not enjoyable. As many have noted, the screen seems very in-your-face, and if the movie is not made for IMAX, the distortion around the edges of the screen can be highly distracting. The seating isn't terribly comfortable, very little leg room and non-reclining chairs. Wish having a snack was allowed. I might come see something here if it's space-related and/or made for IMAX, but otherwise I left Jaws feeling a little seasick.

Just went to see “Oppenheimer” in IMAX. Do not waste your money watching a Hollywood release here!!! This theatre is not designed for that type of production. This distortion of the curved screen takes you out of the movie, and “IMAX quality” is very subpar. The local AMC would be a much better place to see the film. It was not a sharp and crisp as IMAX should be. Also, the seats are incredibly uncomfortable to sit in for that long! My knees were touching the seat in front of me. So save your money and go to an actual theatre.

Do not go to see an IMAX movie here. I don’t even know why they would try to show movies here. There is no recline, so you are staring nearly straight up the entire time. It’s cool for about 10 minutes, but sitting through Oppenheimer is miserable. It is a very tight space, my legs were touching the seat in front of me, so it’s nearly impossible to leave unless you sit near the aisle. You can only focus on like 40% of the screen at any one time. Everyone I went with left with major motion sickness.

  • Sandy Purdy

Count us among the many who were disappointed with their IMAX experience here seeing "Dunkirk". There appear to be only a small portion of seats that don't make you look waaaaay up and over your head. Things are distorted and hard to see. We should have just gone to Regal Stonecrest's IMAX theatre. Also, the ticketing process is confusing....I print this ticket at home, then I have to stand in line to get the staff to print another ticket? Some staff were friendly, but the majority were not.

KARI was the onsite manager today and they made the BEST experience for my child. My child was scared about the dark and loud part of the theatre, and KARI tried everything in their power to comfort, help my child understand, and create the ultimate experience. Kari has mounds of patience! This is a great reason to trust the staff here. They really care about making Science fun. Thank you so much KARI!.you are generous and so kind!

Watched one of the Discovery Center educational movies, "Dinosaurs in Antarctica". Nice experience, impressive sound, cool immersion through the spherical screen. However, the large screen covers such a huge space that you have to crane your head around to see the edges. Also some technical details that probably need to be worked out as the picture sometimes got distorted or out of focus slightly...

  • Patrick Murphy

We had a good time today. We watched the volcano movie and it was amazing! Very clean. All the staff was very nice and helpful. I wish I would have know it was field trip day for several bud loads of kids. Lol. Still had a good time. I highly recommend this place. *We parked in the parking deck next door and we were charged $17.00 for less than 2 hrs. Charged us for all day.

  • Steven Curry

Went to see Dunkirk last night. Terrible experience. The movie was terribly distorted since the screen is in the shape of a spherical dome. It was hard to see any of the picture and it made me nauseated through the entire film. Not worth the $16. Make sure you go see Dunkirk on either a traditional large theatre screen or an IMAX that isn’t shaped like a sphere.

  • Christina

I love IMAX Dome, I LOVED the show and graphics!! Very cool! Sound and visuals were awesome! 1 thing I would highly recommend to really enjoy the experience is if they had reclining chairs. I was scooted down in my chair then sideways in 2 chairs. trying to see all the graphics & designs. It was quite difficult trying to get comfortable.

79′ Diameter Screen & 12,000 Watts of Sound! IMAX® with Laser technology—a next-generation laser projection system and 12-channel sound system exclusive to IMAX theatres—is immersive by design. Developed from the ground up to deliver crystal clear, lifelike images and precision sound for a moviegoing experience unlike anything else.

  • Amy Dill

The idea is super cool but it is not comfortable at all for anyone who is tall. Seats do not recline. I felt like I was missing what was going on in the movie on the sides, I could only focus on the center of the screen because the picture is so much in your face. Might be cool for a celestial experience, I'd pass on movies though.

  • Gian Giles

This is an experience not to be missed. Tickets are cheap, and I always learn something new when I take my kids to watch their educational films. Last but not least, the visuals and sound are amazing. Pro-tip: Don't park in the hotel parking garage. Use the Discovery Place parking garage at the corner of 6th and Church St. Enjoy!!!

  • Shelly Nunes

I am just trying to find the price of a ticket to Accenture Imax at Discovery Place which is extra to the admission price. NO WHERE can I find this stand alone price after searching for an hour plus! Ridiculous Accenture as a consulting firm - access, POS and customer experience! This basic you can't get right with yr name it?!!!

  • Bryan Holland

Last time I went prior to the other day, I was twelve years old and the memory of that experience brought me back. I was worried that the age I was the first time I went meant that the experience wouldn't be so grandiose as now; as an adult. I was, luckily, wrong! It was just as fun as the first time I went back in 1994!

  • Nate Hildreth

Watched Dunkirk. At first I thought it would make me sea sick. Body got used to it and I felt like we were shooting down the Luftwaffe. If they got an improved sound system it would probably be even more intense. Outside of that, kids would love the activities. Made me miss my kids seeing all the hand prints on the wall.

  • Hillary Suyat

Awesome sound! BUT the screen is in your face! The sides are distorted bc the screen is curved and the movie is not made to fit. Plus you are constantly having to turn your head to see all of the scene. First and last IMAX movie. Plus no concession stand and food and drink are not permitted

  • Teresa Mendoza

I took my kids to see Black Panther. The dome is not design for movies you can’t see the whole picture. We are marvel fan they only show one post credit scenes instead of two. You can’t have drinks, nor food. Seats are uncomfortable. If you decide to go sit in the very top.

  • Monica Marcus

I went to the Discovery Place for the first time, for the Beautifica 360 show. While the show was indeed beautiful and I had an exquisite experience, the place looked very well, clean and nice. I am happy they agreed to have the show at the Discovery Place in Charlotte, NC.

  • Carter Ballew

The thought and experience is a very cool idea. The overall staff were very friendly and hospitable. The theatre was very clean, warm, and vibrant. I loved watching the IMAX movie, and i suggest everybody to experience this.

  • Nancy E.

Pros: Nice facility with plenty of seats. Several exits and rope off lines. Easy access to the restroom. Cons: Staff needs to be a little proactive when providing customers with entrance instructions or armband requirements.

  • Jeanette Elliott

Our 6 year old grandson absolutely loved the volcano movie. The whole experience with sound and amazing pictures was outstanding. If the seats reclined a tiny bit to get the full scale of the picture, it would be 5 stars.

  • M D

The done is just an awesome experience movie wise. Enjoyed the new Mission Impossible on the screen. It was amazing to view. Visiting the Discovery Place brought back those childhood school field trip memories.

  • Constantin Films

Don’t go to watch Oppenheimer, it was really bad , I was watching up whole time and all movie was distorted because the screen is curved, but if it’s other movie that is made for it then amazing technology

  • Ethan Buysse

I lost my V-CARD in this dome! I had a blast with my long-time partner, the IMAX was outstanding. A must-see if Broke Back Mountain is playing, it's almost like you're in the action (tent scene).

  • Kerri Phagan

We had an absolute blast watching the imax Ireland film. It was stunning. There's also a huge Marvel feature going on in Discovery Place for some amazing photo ops! Definitely worth the stop.

  • Naomi Burns

What an amazing experience! I've been to other IMAX theaters, but the dome effect here was wild! Definitely immersive. Really brings the story to life--almost a VR experience. Loved it!

  • kaitlyn delvalle

Saw Spider-man Across the Spiderverse here and it was amazing!!! Sat at the very top so my neck wouldn’t hurt looking all around lol. It felt like a different kind of 3D experience.

  • Reza Moghtaderi

Seats are uncomfortable and the viewing angle distorts the movie. Not recommended for Oppenheimer or similar long videos because your neck or your back will be hurting afterwards!

  • Mooncake Gaming

the problem should be that the ticket to watch in the theater should already be included, not buying again up front to watch. It's ok with friends but best when you bring kids

  • Michael Hetzel

It’s a fun experience for the first person perspective films. The only part that was slightly distracting was the many dirt spots either on the screen or projector.

  • Daniel Williams

Top Gun: Maverick. IMAX. With my brothers!! What else is there to say!!! I took my youngest brother to see the original, I took him to see the sequel. Damn cool...

  • Lady Falcon

Saw Beautifica! Absolutely great. Was very surprised there were less than 30 people watching. Maybe better marketing? Place was clean and people were friendly.

  • Paul Christopher Felix F

Screening was just amazing but the seating was horrible. Seats don't recline at all you have to roll your hear all around to cover the complete screen view.

  • Larry Romanowicz

Super clean, great early morning option for a Saturday so we can get in with our little one and still explore Charlotte before lunch even hits!

  • Mark Arnold

Do NOT watch Oppenheimer at this theater unless you want to also go see your chiropractor afterwards. Awful, awful viewing experience.

  • Lazarus Mason

Probably the only IMAX theatre anywhere that not only doesn't sell consessions, but doesn't even allow food or drink in the theatre.

  • Heidi Morris

My husband's first IMAX experience! We saw Beautifica and it was amazing! We'll be back to spend the day at the Discovery Center!

  • Robin Son

Exp wise its good bt with the seat position you get neck nd dont enjoy the movie. For sure watch JP Dominion is not a good option

  • Reuven Yehuda

Its okay. I never really understood the fascination with IMAX, the movie simply goes in a semi-circle. But the theater is nice.

  • robert hobbs

I've been to several Imax theatre's and this is one of the best. It's in a great location and the staff are very friendly.

  • Carl D

Fantastic dome screen and great sound quality. The legroom was tight for a long movie. Food and drink options minimal.

  • George

Watched the National Parks Adventure iMax movie. It was spectacular, and I have added a few parks to my bucket list.

  • Kellen Matthiae

Out of date and low resolution projector. Was surprised at how poor the quality was. Felt like I was back in time.

  • Jael Silva

It's really impressive I think they have one of the biggest screens in the whole state I recommend to see a movie.

  • Shannon Allen

This took me back to when I was a kid, CMS would take us on trips to the discovery place and n o

I saw Oppenheimer here. Many scenes were spectacular. Many others felt too close to the screen.

Great movie theater and no need for 3D glasses to get the taste of that effect
