"My favourite thrift store in Ottawa! Lots of styles, sizes, and brands! I personally think that this place is cheaper than Value Village and on top of that all the clothes that they sell has been literally selected by the employees so you don’t have to worry about stains, smells, holes or broken pieces! I love their reward points as well! I also sells stuff to Plato’s once in awhile and if you actually read what their inventory needs are you will make good money! Plus employees are always happy to explain why they did or didn’t buy certain things! I love the team that works there cuz they are good at what they do from style advice to fashion talks! Even on busy days, I barely have to stand in line because of how well trained all their employees are and they are so good at what they do!!"

I sell my clothes here quite often because it’s the only consignment shop in my area that pays for clothes on the spot. I’ve had hit and miss experiences here, but mostly bad. Most of the staff members act snobby, and even though they are supposed to offer 30-40% of cash of what they’re going to sell the item for, it’s realistically about 10-20% (I’ve gone back and looked at what they priced my items for). If you want an idea of how much you’d get for your clothes, expect them to give $1 for a good condition Aritzia long sleeve. Also, their reasoning for not taking your clothes are inconsistent. They’ve said oxford style shoes don’t sell well, but then I’ve counted 4 oxford style shoes on the shelves a month later. They say they don’t take clothes with wear, but they sell a pilly t-shirts from bluenotes. They’ll also tell you that they are looking for specific seasonal clothes but then buy summer clothes in winter. My advice is to only go there when you are planning on purging a lot from your closet and want to attempt to make a few bucks before donating. Edit: When I say that they look for specific seasonal clothes but then buy summer clothes in winter, I meant that they will deny your off-season clothes even thought they are selling off-season clothes. I understand that they don’t want to overstock, but I’ve found it weird that they’ve bought summer clothing to me and at that same very visit would say “we aren’t taking summer clothes” to my face. Buying from the store is okay because you can find some pretty good deals, but some out of style items are very overpriced. Perhaps it’s not this particular location’s fault for weird pricing. Plato’s HQ should fix their computer pricing system. Addressing the point about the rude staff, there was this one very sweet blonde girl that had great taste. She was the only staff member that went above and beyond to make sellers have a good experience, but I rarely see her working there anymore. The other staff members can often be found slowly sorting items while chit-chatting about annoying things, and barely look you in the eye while they rush through the transaction. I know few other people who have had bad experiences here too.

Terrible experience and even worse customer service. I had a BOGO 50% off coupon text to me. I went to the store and ended up spending $238. When I got home I noticed the 50% off coupon was not applied the 2nd most expensive item (which I bought on purpose thinking it would be the item discounted). I called the store and told them what had happened. At this point I had already removed the tickets from the items and told them that. The person I spoke to said as long as I had the receipt it would be fine and they would leave a note in the drawer about it. I drove there today all the way from Gatineau (2 days after calling) and was told that nothing could be done and that whatever item I was handing the cashier while mentioning the coupon would be the one that the discount was taken on… WUT? I told her that’s not how BOGO works. And then I said “so next time if I buy a $60 item and a $5 item I can have the discount taken off the $60 item if I ask?” She seemed flustered and just kept repeating that that was their store policy and nothing could be done. I am extremely displeased that I spoke to someone who said the situation could be remedied and then took the time out of my day to drive back there just to be left with no resolution and a “manager” that didn’t want to/didn’t know how to help me.

I just left here with the exact same things I walked in with. They didn’t take anything of mine, a few of my things still had tags on them but yet had a list of reasons why they didn’t take my stuff (I posted a picture of it because who can read that?) when we went to pick it up the girl there was a blonde and it didn't seem like she knew what she was doing and was very rude. This is not the first time I’ve gone there to sell my GOOD clothes and they wouldn’t take anything. Every time I go in there I look around just to see and the clothes and shoes that are there are in far worse shape then my clothes or things EVER are, you can’t even see the symbol in the shoes that are there that’s how out of shape the things are that they accept to sell. I will NEVER be back. Completely stupid.

I have gone to Plato a couple of times and I've had luck, I found a couple of top at a really good price. The great thing is that there's always new merchandise. For sure you have to go often to find the really good deals or you can wait for their emails. I personally love their instagram page<3 Thank you to the team for being pleasant =) People need to realize that WE ALL WANT TO SAVE MONEY and at times the store can be busy and the staff of course is helping customers, I have heard people ask if they carry a certain style in a certain size...NOOO..everything is unique. Then, there's always people who go there with extremely high expectation to let's say get a pair of Michael Kors boots in their size and pay 2$..like people grow a brain..it's a business and they need to make money.

Honestly, I have had several great experiences with Plato’s closet but this was my first time visiting the Merivale location and it was horrible experience! I was told on two separate occasions from two different employees to stay around because they are working on my clothes now so I had no problem spent an hour and 15min shopping around, and then checked with them again. I was then told to wait another 45min on top of the hour & 15min. Now, I understand that it’s just estimation on when to pick up but I was told three times not to leave as they were almost done. I spent my evening here.. 3 hours later! Had to cancel my gym class and all. When I could have went to the grocery store and then gym and returned after but NOPE I was told to stay. Wasted an entire Monday evening here.

Plato's on Merivale continues to be well worth a visit. It's rare that I don't find at least one thing to tempt me. I'm Large or Extra Large (mostly...), so thrifting is a bit of extra challenge, but it's surprising how many lovely (or cute, or fun, or ridiculously silly and awesome...) pieces I've pulled off the racks at Plato's. And the stock changes over rapidly enough so that you can visit frequently and not feel like you've seen that, and *that*, and that too as you browse along the racks. :) The staff are great at giving useful feedback when I'm trying something on, and (as someone who's not exactly the average fashionista) I've always felt extremely welcome in the store. Thanks to everyone there who helps make this one of my favorite thrifting destinations!

Unhappy with my experience. I asked to try on a single pair of jeans and the woman asked me to leave my small purse outside the changing room. I would understand if it was big enough to fit the jeans inside of it however it clearly could not. Had I been alone, I would have had to leave the store. There is no way I would have left my purse unattended. I asked the employee if this was a requirement because I felt uncomfortable and she said the store offers to keep my belongings behind the cash. How is it leaving my purse with strangers is any better? I was so embarrassed by this employee I made my mother go back into the store to purchase the item I had wanted. I will never shop again at the Barrhaven location. Rude employees and understaffed.

Absolutely wonderful staff! Great selection and very reasonably priced. I can’t say this enough !!don’t!!go!!to!!value!!village!! Why you should shop here instead of VV: 1) costs waayyy less 2) way better items in way better condition 3) it’s not a sickening money grabbing scheme- the clothes were purchased not given for 100% profit!! 4) the staff!!!! They are actually so pleasant. They gave compliments when I tried things on, gave me their opinions on what they liked best on me (because I’m indecisive), and all my interactions with them felt genuine not like I was talking to their “retail voice” personality. 10/10 I’ve recommended this place every time I get compliments on my corduroy overall skirt!

  • Amy Aziz

This store used to be great. Not anymore. I brought items there that were in perfect condition, some even purchased from there a couple of months ago. I had a brand new pair of nice boots as well. I was told that my things were too fancy. I don't even dress business like. I bought some of them from there. As I look around the store, there are plenty of "fancy" things much fancier then what I had provided. PLUS I saw a purse there that had the strap broken. Come on ladies! Not good on your judgement calls!! Extremely disappointing because I very much liked this place when it first opened. I will NOT be shopping at a place like this ever again. Rather purchase new!

Wish I could give 0 stars. It's not worth the effort. Took a suitcase full of clothes, all in very good condition, some with the tags still on. They told me to come back in an hour so that they could assess the clothes, but ten minutes later, I get a message saying the clothes got rejected. When I went back to the store, I found out that they had not even gone through the suitcase as the clothes were exactly the way that I had folded and placed them. It's not for the money I would have made, because I asked them to give it to charity. They were very unprofessional, and don't do what they claim to do. AVOID!!

I’ve always had a pretty decent experience when going to Platos Closet in the past. They have great prices and nice selection. However, when it came to bringing in my own cloths the experience fell short. They ask that prior to bringing in any items, they be washed and placed neatly in a reusable bag. Shortly after returning to pick up the items that were dropped off, they took a few but the others were thrown into the bag in complete disarray. I would expect that a clothing store would have more respect for cloths not to mention those that didn’t belong to them. Overall disappointed with the service.

  • Chaz z

I have visited Plato's closet twice and have been nothing but happy with their great service. Their offers were fair and since most of my clothes were in good condition and current fashion they took quite a bit. Me and my girlfriend both brought a large amount of clothes and it took them a bit over an hour to decide what they wanted, which was less than half of their quoted time. They offered an explanation for anything they decided not to take which gives you a good idea of what they do and do not want and the employees were all happy and helpful! Now we just need one downtown Ottawa ;D

  • Nicole C

Great place, my daughter loves it. Nice she can bring in her stuff to get discount towards clothes that she purchases there. They have a wide selection. My teenage son ended up buying a nice shirt and cowboy boots (he was over the moon he found some), My daughter walked out with a bunch of shirts and my mother even found something for herself. The employees working there are all so nice and welcoming. Its nice to see such nice employees that you can tell enjoy their job and have fantastic customer service skills. Will most certainly be back!!!!

  • Iyda H

Their biggest issue is pricing. Over the past years they’ve definitely increased their prices (a huge amount). For example, I used to buy leggings and jeans for around 10-15$ but now they cost around 25-30$ each. For being a thrift store and considering the quality and wear on a lot of their items, it’s extremely overpriced. Most of the time you could buy the same clothes elsewhere brand new for either the same price or 10$ more. However, if you don’t mind paying more than its value you can find some really nice stuff depending on the day.

  • Dalli Rayd

Over all not too bad of a store. There wasn't really anything that I would really be interested in, there was almost nothing for men so my partner was left out. I tried bringing in some items to maybe make a little extra money, we were told on the spot that it's not guaranteed cash back but I thought at least the stuff with tags still on it would have a little value we left empty handed. They seem very particular on what they want. No heels, no items except clothing and limited on jewelry Not my kind of store I guess.

  • Brooke Gorham

The young guy who helped my mom and I with the process of selling our clothes was super friendly. We brought 10 bags in, which could be super discouraging to them, but he was super enthusiastic about it, and never came off bothered as I would have expected. The only thing that bothered me a little was that one of the other employees told us we shouldn’t bring our stuff in garbage bags as it comes off as trashy stuff. She probably did not mean it in a bad way, but it bothered my mom and I that she said that.

  • Jocelyn Brannigan

This place is really well organized and clean! There are some great items and some kind of older and not name brand clothes to say that they were so picky when I brought my box of clothes for them to go through. I didn’t realize but they only accept clothes that were purchased in the last 18 months so that is something to remember! (The lady working there said most tags on clothes say the date on them apparently) Overall a good experience. The staff was very helpful and explained everything well to me.

  • Noemie P.

Just finished shopping there and I liked it! The sections are a little bit confusing at first but you end up understanding. I'm an avid thrift shopper and Plato's closet regroups all the kind of clothes I'd usually look for; and at a very reasonable price (Expected a more specialized store to have higher price). Customer service was also great, staff was not pushy but helpful when needed. Will definitely come back to hunt for more treasures

  • Jill setterington

For the third time I have dropped off clothing and they will not take anything. Even a beautiful Lulu jacket claiming its an older style but if you look at their inventory much of it isn't that current. I also included some perfumes which were only used once and was told they don't take opened product , however I just saw in their case several 2/3 to half full bottles. Last time I give them my business.as I was a regular shopper here as well.

  • Blair MacCallum

Been there a few times now. The convenience of getting cash up front is great compared to consignment stores but as a result I find they often lowball just about everything you bring in. They can also be very picky about the smallest of pulls or imperfections and have no interest in any styles that are not current. All in all if you need cash quick and have expendable clothes it’s not a bad spot, I’ve probably averaged about 8$ per item.

  • Olivia Van Horik

Do not drop off clothes here UNLESS they are one of the 6 brand names they accept. Takes hours for them to sort through the clothes, they returned 4 full bags to me and some of the stuff was brand new with tags- but wasn’t the clothes they were asking for. You’re better off dropping your clothes at the Salvation Army or selling them online rather than dropping them off here.

  • Jay Morel

While I found some cool items at a reasonable price, I tried interacting with the staff and asking for advice on certain pieces of clothing that I was wearing. It seemed to me that I was bothering them and they felt less than inviting. I was the only customer in the store and neither of the two sales people that I saw seemed to care that I was even there.

  • Melina ravangard

While I don’t have any problem with this place, for the second time I was treated very rudely by the front desk I’m sorry to say this but their so RACIST specially the tall guy with glasses that usually works on Sundays morning. I don’t think they have the training they need. Also I have dropped off good Clothing and they will not take anything.

  • Ava Britten

Hey, I've been here plenty of times and I always like the environment. I was going through the reviews and saw that the owner replies to the reviews; so if you see this could you kindly tell me the age limit for working here? I am currently looking for a new part time job since the environment at my current one is not the best. Thanks!

  • Santana M.

I was told that they don’t accept high heels , skinny jeans and leggings yet I have shopped there numerous times and I’ve seen all that. Took about 3-4 bags to the location. Will never again. I am not sure if the cashier was just judging me based on how I looked after a long 12 hour shift. I will be taking my shopping somewhere else.

  • Kendra Wormald

I was disappointed with the customer service I received today. It seemed as though the staff didn’t want to help customers. At cash the employee checked their smart watch multiple times and the transaction ended with silence. The atmosphere of the shop overall wasn’t an inviting experience.

  • T V K

Sellers: Don't waist your time preparing, cleaning, washing. They take nothing! Oh, and actually you loose money on gas driving there! Buyers: Buy things on Facebook or kijiji or eBay or other websites. You will get much better deals and better experience overall.

  • Carlos Abasto

This place is one of "Ottawa's best kept secrets". A coworker recommended it to me. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Prices are just incredible, a great variety of clothes and other items. The store is spotless. I would highly recommend Plato's closet!!

Great experience selling and trading here today. Definitely the best Plato's in Ottawa for selling your clothes, and has the best selection too! They are very clear about what they're accepting. We will absolutely be returning to this Plato's …

I had a great experience with this store and the staff. Before I came to the store, I checked their Instagram to see what inventory they want recently and organized my clothes, washed them and brought to the store. Arthur is super friendly.

Brutal. The girl who served me was clearly tired of explaining the process and was very cold. I asked if they take wallets and instantly she said they have too many so no, not even looking at it. then as we start to register i said i had a

At first I thought that it was a really good idea, getting extra cash on the spot and good clothes for cheap... But I think it was one of the worst experience in a store that I had in my life! They gave me 7$ for a bag full of nice things

Worst Experience. I brought in 2 boxes of brand name, in-style, clean clothing. I gave them my name and number then left because they told me it would be an hour before they had decided what they would like to buy off of me. After 3 hours

Why buy new??!! Our jeans get worn through anyway, might as well buy them gently used for a fraction of the price. Who likes to wear the same top to every party? At these prices we can buy a new one every time! My daughter and I love it!

  • Beth Tordjman

I went today, just to look around. Some of the items were ripped. Some items were dirty as well. Prices were good pricing. The only thing that got me cheesed is when I asked for help and the lady with glasses gave me a look and walked

I don’t know about shopping there but if you think about selling your clothes, think twice. I was offered $50 for five Pieces of brand name clothing ! Firsthand those clothes cost me $3400!

  • Kacey McCarvill

AMAZING!!!! I brought in two big bags of clothes and only left with two things! Got over $100 in cash and very happy. Staff were very nice. Would go back to take in clothes or shop!

Not my normal location and was disappointed to learn that my points were not universal. Store was spacious, but that's all I can say because I didn't shop

Been here a few times, and left every time with a deal. Found new nudie jeans for $30! Not my size, but I have told friends about the deals.
