I've had a good, solid, reliable four-star performance out of Bar Cleveland over the years. Been stopping by here for the occasional mid-day shandy since, what, 2010 or so? The main draw for me is the outdoors people-watching table on the corner. But the interior has preserved the authentic old-school character that used to make Surry Hills, Redfern and Waterloo such interesting places. They aren't making any more of these, so get it while you still can. Bar Cleveland's quiet and peaceable during the day. Friendly staff. Clean loo. Plenty of space. Conveniently located between the Oxford Street shops and the southeast Redfern shopping district. Well worth your visit. (Ah! One last thought. Chose this venue for a recent birthday party - the upstairs function area has been very well renovated. The staff were very helpful with organising and booking, available to answer any questions, and this continued through to the night itself where manager Dimitri and all of the team were very friendly. It is a great area for a party, with a separate bar, toilets and our own music. The food platters were excellent and well received by guests. The other positive was that afterwards, we could go downstairs to the pub until 4am. I have no hesitation recommending this venue and thank the staff for helping to make it a great night. (The pub itself has genuine character with great food and drinks too).

BC was my local bar for a long period of time. The staff that came through the high turnover were always hit or miss, but the ones that stuck around were always truly welcoming. Like many Aussie bars, the ongoing locals are the pillar stones of BC. The stories I could tell from the piss-ups there and the friends I made at BC will always be held fondly in my heart. If you're looking for a bar to make good drinking friends, somewhat slightly overpriced drinks (it's Surry Hills/Redfern area, what are you going to expect? ), and some drunken stories to tell... ... Come to BC. Oh, and the burgers are pretty solid, too.

Great steak and plenty of different beers to choose - friendly crowd as well. Just returned for another great meal with friendly service. Eagerly awaiting 1st floor renovation reveal coming soon. This is how I remember the very best hotels in Sydney. 2023 called in for a quick meal at lunchtime. Had flathead and my girl had a chicken burger. Generous size came out on time and was excellent. I had a schooner of Bob Hawke larger and it was light and refreshing. Watching the world go by for 40 minutes at the Cleveland is relaxing and won't break the bank.

Although the food is ok, can't say the same for the "service". After waiting at the bar for around 10 minutes and being acknowledged by the bartender (who to be fair was busy at the time) I waited patiently. All of a sudden a couple come from outside and walk to the counter, the bartender then just goes straight up to them to serve and ignores me. I have never seen such blatant disregard and obliviousness towards a customer, there was no excuse for it. If you love eating your food next to a highway with a side of carbon monoxide this is the place for you, I for one will not return.

This was the worst burger I ever had. I was insanely hungry and I ordered a burger, so they gave me something that looked like a burger but it felt more like a burnt rock. The waitress (that was actually really lovely) looked and it and said that's she's really sorry and she brought me a new one, sadly it didn't help - the meat is probably bad quality and frozen because I couldn't eat more than two bites as I was actually traumatised. The place is really nice for drinks and the stuff are incredibly welcoming but oh mighty, I wouldn't wish this burger to my worst enemies.

Time for a renovation of the ground floor pub, it needs softening and a scrub. Buying a schnitzel on a weeknight, $23….if you want sauce that’s $3 extra…..if you don’t want fries, then its $2 extra to swap it to mash….so in total $28 for a standard schnitzel, what a joke and nothing to write home about. Time for a reality check bar Cleveland….all of your locals are heading back to the bat&ball for the same schnitzel that is $11 cheaper. Menu items far too expensive for an average menu and fairly average food.

I took my best friend here tonight for the first time on her birthday, there was a woman with a plait who I ordered drinks from, I said excitedly to her it’s my best friends birthday tonight whom was next to me, she said nothing, I repeated myself & another patron said, happy birthday, I repeated myself again in the hope that a bar staff would say happy birthday to her; she eventually said happy birthday in a forced manour, it was extremely disappointing such a simple celebration felt like such a chore from one of the bar staff.

I recently had my 40th birthday upstairs in the Sophia room at Bar Cleveland. The staff were amazingly helpful, nothing was too hard.The crew as always at Bar Cleveland are super organized, professional and lovely to deal with. The new venue is stunning, the food was great and all of my guests raved about the space and vibe. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Super happy! A big thanks to Olivia for everything!

I spent many great nights at The Cleveland and made some life long friends here. If you want a no-frills pub in one of the trendiest places in Sydney, then this is your spot. It gets quite busy on a Friday night, so it's best to get in quick or book a table. The Cleve offers good pub grub, friendly service and a lively atmosphere on Friday's. There's even a pool table out the back with a few arcade games.

Drank my first beer of the Sunday. Played one game of pool. Went for a return beer and was refused service from the bartender, citing drunkenness. When I asked to speak with the manager, and he arrives, he tells me the bartender is just doing his job. I said I'm happy to be breathalyzed, which was met with a blank stare. A bit rough overall...

We held our engagement party in the upstairs function room which has recently been renovated and provided a perfect setting for our party. The events team could not have been more helpful prior to our event as well as on the day, every request we made was granted! The catering menu was also delicious and I wish we ordered more. Thanks to everyone there for making it a special occasion for us.

I mostly go there for drinks and playing pool and it is great! The service is great, they are really lovely to talk with and very polite. The atmosphere is always lively in the dining area and the bar alike. You can go here for a fun night with your friends. It'll be a good night!

When you're starving everything tastes good, even the pasta served here with an amount of salt that would leave you on the verge of a kidney failure and 3 micro croutons that were clearly not fresh. Even when you have to wait about 40 minutes for it on a non busy night. Kind FOH team though... Good for drinks, terrible pasta at least. Won't have food here again

Just wanted to give a big shout out to Jake who went over and above the call of duty to take my order over the phone and arrange a bottle of bubbles to be delivered to the table of a family member. This is rare and refreshing service and it absolutely made my Mum's night. Thanks a million mate!

One of the highlights of Surrey Hills/Waterloo. Great old pub with a nice blend of modern feel and the history of 1800's Sydney. Put this pub on your to do list because its one to do. Great service from the staff who let me taste a few IPA's before I settled on this lovely Battler. Five stars.

From my limited time living in Surry Hills this has fast become my favourite local. Great Trivia on Wednesdays and haven't had so much fun at a pool comp in a long while. Beer selection is great and service is even better. Cant wait to try and graft my way onto the winners board! Cheers

We hired this venue for a family event, and will definitely consider it for a future event. Organisation was quite easy thanks to the helpful staff, and the staff on the day were attentive and friendly. The upstairs function area has been nicely renovated and the food very tasty.

I ate the Monday lunch special - Chicken Schnitzel. I have eaten a lot of Schnitzels and this one was definitely up there. It was quite thick and well cooked and the lemon was nice and fresh. As a bonus, the chips were the best I've had in a while, super crispy and delicious.

Hidden gem: the bistro food was very good! Wgyu Beef Burger: Decent, well presented and well made. Fries crispy. Greek Lamb (only available weekends): Amazing, soft and tender with a fresh Greek salad and perfectly roasted potatoes and pumkin. Fast and friendly service!

I had my birthday party there last Saturday night. Drinks were reasonably priced, we had a room to ourselves, where we brought our own music and were able to play videos through the projector. The food was very nice, and the staff very helpful and friendly.

I cannot fault the event, staff or food. Everyone did everything in their powers to make our event the success it was. The renovations to the upstairs space have been done very well and make it an oasis on Cleveland street.

Had a beautiful private room for a birthday party here . Room was wonderfully decorated, food and drinks first class and the staff were excellent. Definitely recommend for a private function or just a meal and a drink.
