Something that seems to have picked up more steam in the Vancouver food scene lately is bánh cuốn. Similar to Chinese rice rolls, bánh cuốn rice sheets tend to be much thinner and more delicate. I decided to try the ones at Viet Mama Cafe on Victoria Drive as I’ve been hearing good things about this place. In addition to the Bánh Cuốn Nhan ($14.95), I wound up ordering their Salad Rolls ($6.95 for 2pc) and Spring Rolls ($7.95 for 2pc). While I found the salad roll to be a bit standard, the unusually flat spring rolls was a stunner with a good crisp on the deep-fried rice wrapper which encased the generous amount of pork, shrimp, crab and veggie filling. Of course, the main event here is the meat rice rolls which has a pork/shrimp filling that’s sprinkled with fried shallots and served with Vietnamese ham (in addition to meat balls which come separated in a container of sauce). This is the first time I’ve tried bánh cuốn and I have to admit that I really liked the lightness of this dish. Definitely pair this with their crispy spring rolls for some textural contrast. Update: Sep 2023 - Finally got to dine in-person. Beef Carpaccio / Bò Tái Chanh - good flavour and loved the onions with the slices of beef. Meat Rice Roll / Bánh Cuốn Nhân Deep Fried Fish Cakes / Chả Cá Thì Là - plump and bouncy. Butter Garlic Chicken Wings / Cánh Gà Bơ Tỏi - served with sweet chili sauce.

First off, there are not enough stars to give for this review of Viet Mama Cafe in Vancouver on on Victoria St. between 35th and 36th Ave. The Food here is very reasonable in cost for what you get in quality. The staff are very polight and hardworking always taking care of customers needs when needed. The food here is so delicious. The Grilled Lemongrass Chicken ( Bánh Mì Gà Nướng) also the Grilled Lemongrass Pork Sliced ( Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng) is one of if not the best I have had in Metro Vancouver in a really long time. I also had the most delicious dish here it's their Special Fried Rice (Cơm Chiên Đặc Biệt)(*See picture below). I had the Chocolate Slush and Taro Slush to drink and they were both made so well made and tasted perfect. The time and effort the staff put into every customers experience here makes it a very pleasant and enjoyable one. You can get either take out or dine in here, however I would suggest due to limited seating you may want to phone ahead if you wish to dine in. The other thing about this amazing place is they are open later then most other places, so even if you just get hungry late night and want something worth the trip and money, then Viet Mama Cafe is the place to go. Thank you to the staff for making my first trip that of many more to come. 10 outta 10 hands down on quality choice place to eat.

A little, underrated gem hidden on Victoria Drive! Me and my brother often visit this place after our night shift and despite coming being pretty late at around 1-2 am, the place is still pretty packed with customers! The whole vibe feels a bit cramped with very few tables (notably when it gets busy), but the food is really flavourful, and the portion is extremely generous considering many Vietnamese restaurants nowadays are increasing their prices. I visited tonight for take out and the server suggested me a new, upcoming item called "Bap Bo Sot Tieu Den", which is basically beef shank stew with black pepper sauce served with hot steamed rice and greens. The price is a bit on the pricey side at $20 but the meat was extremely tender and juicy and the sauce was flavourful with a bit of kick to it! It was so good that when I came home I finished the whole thing and forgot to take a picture for review! A quick note is that if you visit this place next time and ask for the item, they'll give you a discount for this item as a promotion until they add it to the menu!!! All and all, it is extremely worth visiting for a meal that satisfies your hunger without leaving you hanging, especially when you crave for late-night meals!

Would totally recommend this place! My bf and I visited Van for a little getaway and were hoping we would be able to find some good Vietnamese rice rolls because they are delicious but so hard to come by here in Canada. We came in on a Sunday afternoon so it wasn’t too busy; we ordered some rice rolls and crab and fish cake noodles. We were told we would have to wait for about 30 minutes for the rice rolls which was a bummer but anything for good bánh cuốn. The staff was super accommodating and served us hot tea while we waited. Time flew by as we got ourselves comfortable on the couch-style seats and people watching by the window. The wait was so so worth it as I got to enjoy some absolutely delicious Northern style bánh cuốn and my bf thoroughly enjoyed his crab and fish cake noodles. The foods were so authentic and prices were fair too. Will totally eat again if we get a chance to visit Van again!

We started our meals with 4 people sharing 3 cups of water and 7 chopsticks and a refilled chili oil with enough rations for 2 bites. Luckily for us, four out of six orders were completely wrong, turning what should have been a straightforward meal into a confusing ordeal. The combination of meat pho ended up with 3 sliced beefs in our pho and there was no tendons, briskets or shanks to be found. In addition, our short ribs order came as rice rolls with meatball in soup. Our drinks were incorrect we received a green drink when we ordered a mango smoothie. Despite our attempts to rectify the situation, the giga chad staff took our orders back to the kitchen and said sorry, I wrote down the wrong orders but insisted we keep the wrong orders or he'll get in trouble. The lack of accountability and failure to address the mix-up felt like I had to take the L so he doesn't get ganked in the backroom for messing up the order!

Ordered takeout and was told it would take 15-20 minutes but it took around 30 minutes before it was ready. We ordered the 47. Com Ga Cha Gio - $14.95, 38. Sate peanut pho chicken -$ 14.50 and 39. Bahn Nhan - $14.95. Everything came in a healthy portion. The peanut noodles could have called for more peanut flavour. But I enjoyed it regardless. They were also really generous with the toppings. The rice rolls were very soft and the filling was a bit dry but when dipped in the provided sauce it was good. I liked that they provided fish cakes and when wrapped together was very good. The rice topped with chicken and spring roll was I believe the smallest portion of the three. The spring roll was very crispy. The chicken had a very strong lemon grass and wasn't too dry. I did enjoy most of the food and would come back to try other foods. They have a big menu so there's lots to try.

UBER EATS REVIEW: Everything was nicely packaged and even the rare beef was separated! I love the attention to details so your beef doesn’t get over cooked etc. I loved it so much that I ordered the same Order to my parents lol! Pho dac biet : generic pho but how they seperate the raw beef was perfect! I like my meat rare when it comes to pho Banh cuon nhan: this is my favourite dish out of all of them! I believe it’s just for the weekends (shown on Uber eats, not sure if that goes to the restaurant menu as well) their fish sauce tastes sooooo good and refreshing. Fresh and light Bun rieu cua Tom: tastes like bun cha ca with the dill and soup base BUT still tastes delicious. I would say this was a fusion of bun rieu and bun cha ca lol Great service, packaging, big portions for a good price. Highly recommend and would Come again for these dishes!

Went in late night around 1 AM and got the last table available. Waited 20 mins to order after repeatedly flagging down the one worker in the front several times just to end up getting neglected. In our table for 4, we were given 3 cups of water, 7 chopsticks and 5 minutes later a fourth cup of water with debris inside. The chili sauce on the table was empty, we had to ask 3-4 times for it to be replaced only for it to come as we were finishing our meals with it being filled up 1/5th of the container (enough for about 2 spoonfuls). Food overall was decent but atmosphere and service were like watching a man rip out his own chest hair by the handful.

The new kid on the block for vietnamese cuisine. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the aroma of delicious vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant itself isn't that big and has limited seating so there may be a bit of a wait when you arrive. Unlike other vietnamese restaurants where there is a ton of options on the menu....viet mama cafe kept it pretty simple and stuck to what they did best. One of their popular dishes being the banh cuon comes with or without meat fillings. The other dish I do recommend is the chicken pho. The broth was light but flavorful. The noodles are thicker than your average pho noodles but kept its chew and flavour. These may look like simple dishes but they made them very well and I will definitely be back for more next time.

By far the best pho restaurant in Vancouver. The broth and quality of ingredients are admirable. Viet Mama has stolen my heart through my stomach! Best salad rolls I've ever had, excellent soups as well. I love that the rare beef is cut in strips and not slices, they don't clump together :D They just added new delightful things to their menu and extended their operating hours, this place is amazing! A must try! Hands down, my favourite. UPDATE: Since the change I last mentioned in hours of operation, the quality of the food went downhill and I no longer recommend this restaurant. I tried it a good 10 times before deciding to give up on them. The salad rolls took a dramatic turn for the worst and the broth tasted like it started getting watered down.

an incredibly rude person who is associated with the restaurant was texting inside the only bathroom of the restaurant with the door open. when she saw me wanting to use the bathroom, she exhaled vape smoke into the bathroom, smirked, and then slowly walked out. she sat with a male employee in the restaurant at 12:08am on saturday, october 8th. the food is alright, but that experience alone destroyed just about any reason for me to visit this place again. if you actually want customers visiting your place, you should at leasy pretend to care about the sanitary conditions of the restaurant, with the bathroom being the most important.

Springs rolls were pretty darn good. Vermicelli crab meat with fish cake was alright especially comparing it to their competitors next door and across the street. The broth was light and fresh, not at all salty or fishy if that's what you prefer. Rice butter beef is a no for me. Big portion but nothing special. Reminded us of teriyaki beef. Verdict: Tong Tong: meh Me: I would give it a second chance because the item I really wanted to try was meat rice roll which is only available on Sundays and they have other appetizers that other viet places don't really offer.

Discovered this fantastic late night hole-in-the-wall, late one night when everything else was closing and we were famished. Wandered into a hopping busy place full of interesting people to order take-out, watched the kitchen crew working impossibly hard, wondered if the pho would be any good or just another generic watery broth. WOW, we were VERY VERY HAPPY and SURPRISED when we got back home and tried the food. The yummy beef brisket, the rich, deeply flavourful broth, the crispy fresh sprouts, fresh basil, etc etc were all divine. Definitely coming back!

Been hear a couple of times. Overall great place to eat. Food is great. Peanut Sate was fantastic late night food. Rare Beef Brisket and Beef Ball Noodle is also good. They were very service oriented. One time my order was late (without prompting) they gave a free veggie spring role as an apology. Overall awesome experience for a good price.

Delicious food and great service. I was excited to try their crab noodles with fish cakes and it didn't disappoint. The broth was flavourful, yet light. There was plenty of fish cakes and crab, and enough noodles to fill me up. Overall, it was a very satisfying bowl of noodles. Their menu is small, yet there is still a variety because each dish is unique. Check this place out if you're in the neighborhood. There's plenty of Vietnamese places to choose from in the area, but I'll definitely be coming back to this one.

My new favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver! I came here for my first time on the weekend and was amazing by the service, cleanliness and quality of ingredients they use for their food (they do not use MSG). We ordered the salad rolls, spring roll, meat rice roll, special beef noodle and Vietnamese iced coffee. Between two people we finished everything, it was soooo good. You can tell the food is made with love and it feels like you’re eating a really good home cooked meal. So glad i found this place.

A delicious late night pho spot. Large portions with tasty pho broth; next time i will be asking for half portion of noodles. If you ask for extra rare beef they’ll give you a full plate of meat (x2 the amount that they give originally in your bowl.)

Ordered some steamed rice rolls for pickup and these are the veggies that came with the order. It doesn’t seem like it was cooked by the steam of the rice rolls since the bean sprouts were placed directly on top of the food and they were fine. It’s just disappointing opening up the veggie bag and seeing that. Hopefully it’s not because the veggies were from a few days before. Food was fine except for the unpleasant oil smell from either the onion or the rice rolls itself.

I’ve been hearing about this place and decided to order take out to support local restaurants during this new normal. Highlight was the banh cuon nhan meat rice roll. It was so soft and silky. DELICIOUS! The crab meat vermicelli was really tasty too! Would definitely order again or go eat in once it’s allowed again. The lady was super sweet and cute! Great service when I ordered they asked when I would like to pick up so I can get it at the freshest possible!

Tried this new restaurant for the first time on a Thursday night. The food was delicious and the owner was very hospitable and super friendly :) We had the spring rolls which were different than the typical spring rolls , they were square shaped and had crab meat in them , super delicious ! The Pho was very satisfying as well, a nice clean broth with high quality beef. The steamed rice rolls were awesome as well. Would definitely come back here again.

Update March 2022, seems to have been a new owner change. I guess because of the covid times the old owners had to sell there family restaurant to a new group. Food quality seems like more quantity instead of quality. Vibe feels more like a late night joint to eat. Hours are crazy open till 3am on most days! Before the owner change the food was amazing! (Photos are from the old owner)

Stumbled upon this delicious vietnamese joint. Simple one page menu with reasonable pricing. No need to have 40-50 items. Food was tasty and authentic. Banh cuon is made fresh but only on Sat and Sun. Portions were good and ratio between vermicelli, meat and greens/herbs were spot on. Enjoyed our visit and will be back to try their Pho and rice dishes.

  • Vineet

Ordered the pho ga and house special pho. The pho ga used maximum 6 pieces of scrap leftover chicken. I’ve never been to a pho place that has done that before it’s sad. Not only that but both phos used flat noodles instead of the regular thin pho noodles. Their Vietnamese coffee had an awful taste as well and was one of the worst had.

Solid three stars. $8 banh mi but was $10 because they didn't let us know the number of people for which a table surcharge would be applied. Would have been nice to know up front. Got the cold cut sub. Had ham, pork floss, no head cheese, good spread but carrots lacked flavour. Overall, it's ok.

Had 3 items from the menu delivered. Deep fried chicken was decent (only thing that we could finish) Lemon grass chicken needed way more seasoning and the "fish sauce" tasted like watered down vinegar. Beef stew was very watery and also bland not to mention that the meat was hard. All in all, it was very disappointing for a $50+ meal

Ordered the spring rolls and veggie spring rolls few times the past year, today I ordered the same thing but I got the "mini size" veggie spring rolls and I talked to the staff than he argued and lied to me that was changed 2-3 years ago!!! Holly... What's wrong with the management???

I tried Uber eat before they always put some small note and make me feel happy. I had dine in today and now I can say this place is perfect Viet food. Clean, cozy and nice staff!! Must try spring roll. Crispy and lots of flavor inside. I love tick rice noodle too. It so soft ;)
