the kids screening room movies are an amazing idea! I took my 4 year old foster son to see shrek tonight since he LOVES popcorn movie nights and has been dying to go to the movies for a while but I was always too nervous I’d pay so much for him to not like it or he’d be too loud for other people. It was the perfect place for me to take him because I knew it was meant for kids and people wouldn’t mind him being loud (I also thought the popcorn and juice combo was an awesome deal). Turns out he was amazing! Wasn’t loud at all and stayed awake the whole time too! The staff were super nice too and gave him a cup of water when he ran out of juice which normal movie theatres wouldn’t do. I also noticed quite a few families with loud kids and I could tell they don’t go to the movies often and probably really appreciate the judge free zone. Overall I had the best experience and would recommend to anyone!

Cinematic gem in the heart of downtown Kingston with superior accessibility thanks to the recent renovations. Excellent concessions are far less expensive than the big movie plexes. Buttered popcorn is fabulous and there is a good selection of drinks. The accessible washroom is quite possibly the largest I have found anywhere and could accommodate large mobility devices and care assistants with ease. While everyone is lined up in Toronto for TIFF, you can see first rate films here with no hassle and low prices. The excellent website has detailed information that anticipates any questions you might have about parking, prices and access. The staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. Just remember - it is CASH ONLY.

Incredible gem that contributes to Kingstonian culture. The Screening Room is definitely a joy to have as a night out. The pricing was much less than what you pay at the Big Box. The location and limestone building make the theatre rooms unique and “home feeling”. The premises were spotless. The staff recognized right away it was our first visit and went above and beyond to walk with us to ensure we found our way. The sound quality and volume of the film was perfect, and the chairs were more than comfortable. The concession stand was darling, with the option to purchase anything from tea to alcohol. I can’t see a reason to ever go back to the corporate Theatres. The Screening Room definitely steals the show.

I LOVE THE SCREENING ROOM. It has such a nice vibe to it, it's small, quaint, and such a cozy experience. While they do still get some big name movies they also have smaller Indy films and play classics as well, a great variety. They have great snacks but what I especially love is that I can get a tea in a cozy mug. The only downside with this is that there isn't really a place to put your mug in the theatre but I just deal with it, I still love it. If you're thinking of going here I highly recommend but it's worth mentioning that it's cash only so don't forget that! But such a great local gem.

The screening room is an excellent cinema for downtown Kingston. Good selection of films and with a third screen coming soon the theatre will be a bonafide multiplex for lovers of foreign and indipendent (read good) cinema. My only complaint is that I don't like that they can be a bit late on scheduling. I usually like to look ahead a month and have an idea what's going to be playing and when. Too often. I'll only find out a film is being played on it's final stretch of screenings. Perhaps that's more a problem on my end!

Hype. It’s a piece of history, an experience, it’s modern, there’s real butter. Hype. You get to see things that aren’t marvel films but you can also see marvel films. Go. Hype. That’s three hypes and if you don’t get the hype then go again until you do. Audiences are engaged and they as a business are so engaged in the community. I cannot praise this place enough. Whether you are a local or a tourist ya gotta check it out. One suggestion, use coffee mugs without handles so they can fit in the cup holders please!

The Screening Room is a peaceful alternative to Big Box Movie Theatres. It is locally owned, and is a wonderful addition to Kingston's downtown community. The Screening Room shows Current Movies that play at the Odeon, or Ciniplex. In addition, it screens facinating movies and documentaries that do not screen commercially. This is what makes the Screening a cut above Big Box Theatre productions. Also, staff are welcoming, making the customer feel right at home. It is a cash only establishment.

Stylish retro interior, diverse selection of films, comfortable but not overly plushy seating, and properly configured sound make this independent theatre one of the best I've had the distinct pleasure of attending. My favourite part was drinking water from an actual glass rather than the wasteful plastic cups that the big chains force you to slurp from. Will most definitely be returning for another such experience (saw The Summer of Soul this time) - 10/10 would recommend to any cinephile

  • Stephen Fessenden

Awesome experience. Only downside was we were in a quiet film and could hear a much louder film from next door. It was really muffled though and I only noticed it once, so 5 stars. On the upside, there is plenty of legroom in the cozy theaters and seats are comfy enough that I fell asleep about an hour in. The seats are raised enough at each level that you don't have to worry about anyone blocking your view. Plus a great film selection that you can't find at other theaters.

With the recent renovations, the place looks (but more importantly feels) sharp and very much like a place to watch "films". The tickets are a little pricer than larger theatres, but the concessions are cheaper so it often works out to a similar price. Though an annual membership pays itself off very quickly with even mildly-frequent visits. Staff are extremely friendly, welcoming, and homely as well. It's a real treasure for Kingston to have.

  • Tara N

It's a cute retro looking movie theater. It's small and offers a wide variety of movies from oldies to new releases and even indies. The chairs were comfy and the theater was comfortable. I think the snacks are just too expensive but it's true for all movie theaters nowadays. The tickets were cheaper than other theaters with a membership price. I don't know if it's the same price for old movies and new releases though.. i would assume so.

Sunday-had a great time seeing Elvis the movie Lost my KASADOR touque. Jordan from The Screening Room found it!--He called me and I have it back!! Went back to the Screening tonite (friday Oct 14/22) with my friend Jennifer. We saw. the Bowie film. Great show- fun picking out the live concerts we went to! Staff there is so pleasant & friendly to deal with. It is so much more than the big theatre chains. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT BUSINESS!

  • CJ Woodford

This theatre is a fantastic blend of comfort and nostalgia! The physical space and decor are an experience in and of themselves. The movie selection is always interesting, and they will also host events such as the recent Haunted Holidays joint event with Kingston Haunted Walk. Combined with a fully stocked concession stand, extremely comfortable theatre seating, and convenient parking options, this is my new go-to theatre.

  • Peter B

A great intimate experience. You can take a proper mug of tea/coffee into the theatre with you. You get to see a couple of trailers before the feature movie without sitting through a long drawn out pre show. Definitely a better variety of quality movies. It is always clean. An added bonus is that you can park in the multi storey car park behind and walk straight into the building. A great asset during inclement weather.

  • Cleah Bunting

I love the screening room! The atmosphere is really laid back yet professional. The choice of movies are fantastic! Everyone there is a movie buff. I'd like to see once in awhile a classic film...maybe they don't do as well? But The Maltese Falcon or Dial Nine for Murder would be cool on those screens. Or a Game of Thrones night? Not sure if they would be allowed to do that, but on the larger screens would be wicked.

  • Henry Linda

Fabulous independent theatre. Great films, staff and vibe. I just wish The Roxy cinema wasn't quite so drafty in the winter and that somehow, although I realize this is not the cinema's fault really, that the patrons here could stop talking through the movies. I don't understand it. Never seems to be a problem at the big mainstream cinemas. Why do people feel welcome to chatter at our lovely independent theatre?

  • Ben Weaver

The renovations are really nice and make this theatre a much better experience. The updated seats are very comfortable and the people are friendly. This theatre is perfect for those who love movies without watching them with a ton of people. If you are looking for a place where everyone who goes here has a genuine appreciation for the artistry or for somewhere to see award show contenders, this is the place.

  • P Laframboise

Great local theater. 3 screens, 2 large, one small. Good coffee, served in a mug. Recently renovated. Fully accessible with elevator. Yearly membership options for discounts and free movie on your birthday! Free street parking after 5:30pm, or parking garage off of Brock street, for being flat rate of $3. Back entrance to theatre directly from parking garage. Highly recommend this unique cinema experience.

  • Cat London

The Screening Room is a gem of downtown Kingston and the only place in town to enjoy a diverse and wide-ranging selection of films. The staff are friendly, the tea is served in actual mugs, the butter on the popcorn is actual butter, and the film selection is exceptional. There's always something interesting to watch there, and they hold great special events and screening. Can't beat the Screening Room!

  • Mike Green

Oh my goodness. If you haven't been to The Screening Room yet do yourself a favour and go. This is one of the most wonderful places Downtown Kingston. The owner clearly cares about movies so much - the member's card is a bargain, with the new renovations there are more screens, nice washrooms, and an elevator (yay accessibility!). They also serve mugs of tea and fresh popcorn! What are you waiting for?

  • A Gh

One of Kingston GEMS, with selective films collections range from vintage to up to date (2020). The nice staff are following the rules of restricting the numbers and along the hour extremely proper sanitary cleaning which allow audience to enjoy films in a safe comfy envirnoment during this Covid time. This place reminds me of Villa Borguese Cinema in ROME; little cute cinema with lovely ambience

  • Jay

I love how intimate the screening room feels. Small, quiet. You don't get those typical "big screen" annoyances from others; loud abnoxious etc. Typically attracts a great fan base, so I've never felt interrupted during a film. The screening room experience comes across as one finding a hidden gem in Kingston. If you're an indie film fan, or just looking to change things up - you can't go wrong here.

  • Jessica Beardsley

This art house theatre shows movies that might not be on your radar but should be. The prices for admission and food are reasonable and despite the small size of rhetoric theatres it still provides a cinematic experience especially for these smaller movies. I really enjoyed my experience. The staff are friendly. Make sure you bring cash this is a CASH ONLY theatre.

  • John William

Was withholding the fifth star earlier due to the lack of films being screened. With the new renovations the place looks fantastic, and with the added rooms more can be screened. Prices are good. Film choice is great (and I hope that carries on past Oscar season). Didn't like how the cupholders reclined with the chairs in the 'metro theatre', but that's a nitpick.

  • Shauna Lynch

One of my favourite things to do in Kingston is to see a movie at the Screening Room. Be sure to have cash on you! They offer a great selection of movies and have a nice selection of snacks. The staff is always very friendly! I'm sure it is out of their control and probably a building problem but I wish the escalator was working to make the space more accessible.

  • Malcolm MacPherson

Wonderful alternate cinema! Creative selection of movies! No trailers before the movies! I will not go to chain cinemas like Cineplex! Too much advertising and marketing before you actually see the movie! The staff are friendly and well-informed! The venue is creative and extremely well-run and clean and comfortable with good air quality! Highly recommend!

  • Sean Liddle

Love this place. Nice screens, small cinemas, GREAT popcorn, price is right too. Its where you will find the good artsy and independent films that you normally would have to rent, buy or seek out online. Excellent. highly recommended. BUT NOTE.. no advance sales. Show up early to get tickets. Escalator does not work in building but there IS an elevator.

  • Jonathon Reed

Awesome local theatre. Sometimes features an eclectic line-up of films, but there's usually something that will grab your interest. Indie films, documentaries, cult classics. A film festival or two. Downside is you can't pre-order tickets so it's first come, first serve. Drinks are expensive. Popcorn gets as much butter as you want.

  • Dana Charlton

Great curated selection of films, both mainstream and independent. Clean and inviting atmosphere. Am part of a group that watches films there the last Sunday of the month, and all the screenings I have been to have been fantastic and spiritually & intellectually stimulating. Go for Halloween for a real (trick or) treat!

  • Bryan Scott

A great little theater that shows current movies along with Classic Movies. A great little gem downtown Kingston. Privately owned and real butter for your popcorn. This theater is very supportive of our community. Inexpensive membership which grants you cheaper tickets. I might add the tickets are already a great price.

  • Gabriel Fedorko

Small movie theatre downtown Kingston. It's location in impeccable but other Ban that I don't really get the hype of this place... movies are still $12 cash only. Cheap movie day is a better deal! Still, can't beat the location. Seats are okay. Probably wouldn't be my first choice for a movie theatre in the future.

  • Stephen Kemp

What at treasure ! Smaller screens than the chain theaters but a fine selection of films that those places just don't show...they have just shown a run of films by Stanley Kubrick and at a reduced rate - especially with the membership. It has been recently renovated and is a nice place to spend a couple of hours

  • Big Taco Combo

An excellent gem. We rented a theatre for my son's birthday party and it was awesome! We got to play our own movie (Godzilla Final Wars) and it was a blast, great service, clean and nifty vibe. They even personalized the marquee above the door to the theatre we were in. Many thanks and a great memory!

  • Rod Sand sculpting and more

This is an amazing place to see a movie. Went there on a date night with my wife for the first time. Saw Oppenheimer. It's not a large screen like the others, but very quaint. The atmosphere was perfect. We will visit this location many more times. Great job, guys. Keep up the great work.

  • Dan Tassone

Always has a great selection of contemporary independent movies with a few older cult favorites throughout the month. The staff is incredibly friendly and clearly put a lot of work into the theater. This is one of my favorite spots in Kingston! Reelout Film Fest is an annual highlight

  • Colin Ennis

Really great experience. We saw Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri. The lobby area is a bit dated, but the prices are totally reasonable and the actual screening room itself is cosy, which really makes for a communal audience experience. I'll definitely be coming back!

  • buff cabbage

If you ever wanted to experience film the way it was meant to be seen I would highly recommend this place. They have movie festivals that feature cult classic films new and old. Popcorn with real butter and they don't use plastic straws. It's really a hipsters delight!

  • Janine Abuluyan

It's one of my absolute favourite places in Kingston. Screening Room always has a well-curated movie list, the price of admission and concession food/drinks are reasonable, and the membership card is cute (also worth it if you go at least twice). Note: It's CASH ONLY

  • Dan

Remember to bring cash for concession. Nice little place it's not like the big theatres with reclining chairs and everything so don't be expecting that. Parts were under construction so I'm not sure regularly but doesn't seem wheelchair friendly at the moment.

  • Jenna

Excellent little theater. They offer free real butter on the popcorn and a free glass of water. The tickets and food were all very reasonably priced, I think a large popcorn was $6. Comfy chairs and good selection of movies. I would definitely return.

  • Chris B.

I've been going here for years, seen they renovated looks really good. Small theater (a good thing) and play a spectrum of movies from off new to foreign (even subtitled) to classics to cults. 100% recommend. Cash only. Perfect place to bring a date.

  • Cam McIver

Such a cool place, love supporting this business, love the local vibes. Very reliable and relaxed, cheap popcorn and snacks (compared to other theaters) and only plays 2-3 trailers before each movie! Cannot day enough nice things about this place

  • Max Logan

A beautiful independant movie theatre, showing a beautiful and ecclectic mix of films. They have recently renovated, adding a third screen, and it is so nice to see them expand and improve. Looking forward to Rocky horror this October, too!

  • Jeff Berthelette

What a cute fun place! When we arrived we could tell that they really appreciated cinematography, and the drinks and snacks were a fraction of what you would pay at the theater. Highly recommend! We will definitely be going back soon!

  • Albert M

Good place for non mainstream films. Always good selection of current and some classic movies Great service today. Able to change viewing times with one email. Get members card with senior doscount if eligible Now serve some alcohol

  • Will Green

Great pricing on movies AND concession. If there's a movie playing you want to see, always check The Screening Room first! They also now serve alcohol and have started hosting more regular events. If I could give 6 stars, I would.

  • Deb Rankin Bell

Fabulous venue. Seating is super comfortable and rooms superb. Excellent movies and great concession. I highly recommend joining their membership or at the very least going to one of their great movies to see for yourself.

  • Hal Cain

Always a pleasure to see a movie at The Screening Room. Now showing some first-run films, in addition to arts and classics. Comfortable seating, quality digital audio / video, eco-conscious concession, and friendly staff!

  • Selena Colucci

Super cool atmosphere. A relaxed vibe & so much nostalgic history from someone who appreciates films & film making. It's an awesome date night with the cult classics, & the forgotten gems always playing so conveniently

  • Shasha Wang

The foreign movies they play are very tasteful. Really great selections of indie movies and occasional big blockbusters movies! I really like this theatre, not to mention, their buttery popcorn is the best …

  • Gail Charlebois

Love the ambiance of this place. A gem in a great downtown location. Great movies. Always have a fun night out. Dinner and a movie and a walk or late night entertainment and adult beverages . Simple pleasures. …

  • Gillian W

Always feel good watching a movie here. Great seats, great affordable concession, and i love being able to get a tea to drink while watching a movie. All the staff are so friendly. Really love supporting this place.

  • Hannah Jones

A local favourite, this family owned theater tends to screen a lot of art house films and holds many events throughout the year, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show dress-up event and the Kingston Film Festival.

  • Ruth Allen

Enjoy the experience at this independent movie theatre always. Great membership options. The new renovations have made the venue fully accessible. If you yave not checked it out yet, I suggest you give it a try.

  • Daryl Tremain

I felt very safe with the precautions taken in the lobby and in the Metro Theatre. At no time were distancing requirements breached, and masks were worn, except while eating and drinking. It was good to be back!

  • Jadadefense

While the movie itself did not impress I enjoyed the old nostalgic feeling of a theater which for me hearkened back to the experience of the old style theatres of the 80's. Sometimes bigger is not always better

  • Amr ElSharkawy

The small size seating with the big screen has it's effect to get you living the movie. The presence of the creator/actor/director and one of the actresses is something you don't get in regular movie theaters.

  • Eric Jacques (griffondude)

Saw Beans there yesterday. Amazing place! Efficient, friendly staff as well as great quality projectors, sound and seating. I like their selection of classics and modern indie films. I will go again for sure.

  • Judy Thompson

Love going to see movies here. Theatres small and intimate, concession cheaper, movies - out of the ordinary that wouldn't be given the time of day at the large theatre. Really as become my theatre of choice!

  • Lara Casey

This is an adorable little movie theatre that has really tasty popcorn that you can get topped with real butter (at no additional cost). The staff are always friendly, and the theatres are small and homey.

  • Thomas Vaughan-Johnston

One of my favorite places in Kingston. Excellent range of interesting indie films and a generous helping of "big" Hollywood releases. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Student discounts. What's not to love?

  • Suzanne Murchison

Great spot, but odd to have to go to long line at counter to show your e-ticket before going to the right theater room, when they don't really mark it anywhere... but it was a great movie. Will go again

  • David Kusalik

Great local movie theatre with good selection of movies. Movie snacks are quite reasonably priced, especially compared to the big theatres. I will likely continue to have a membership here for a while.

  • sloane rosen

An antique feeling movie theatre that feels different than cineplex. Went to see a movie and the setting was lovely, the staff was friendly. The snacks was decently priced. Overall a great experience.

  • Marie-Andree Harvey

Friendly staff, always great, original or indie movies and intimate viewing. Opposite to big box cineplex... Very dynamic cinema owner with very creative idea. My favorite movie spot, hands down!

  • Frank H.

The Screening Room is one of Kingston's cultural highlights. Great selection of movies, a great team, an affordable night out, supports our film festivals. What's not to love about this place?

  • Mark Donovan

I was the only one in the theater. There was something wrong with the projector. I stayed there for two hours and the movie never started, so I left. Since I had snuck in, I wasn't too upset.

  • Gord Brown

The staff were great and very helpful all positive. Snacks were not priced out of this world and coffee in a real China (sorta) cup. Was flabbergasted ,no styro or plastic ...gotta luv it...

  • Emma Kushnir

Coziest movie theatre and best options in Kingston! Amazing staff and beautiful theatres. They have taken amazing COVID-19 precautions and create a safe haven for movie goers in Kingston :)

  • Jennifer Paton

First big screen movie in months, such a nice experience. Felt very safe with so many seats (and bathroom stalls) closed off. Enjoyed a mug of herbal tea during the movie, that was a first.

  • Derek Burggraf

Old school theatre experience at very reasonable price. My 1st visit was really great and I will return again. Very cool with the turntable playing vinyl records behind the ticketsalesman.

  • Graham Stratford

The renovations have made it very comfortable, and the sound and video quality is excellent! We are so lucky to be able to go and see movies that never make it to the Big Chain theaters.

I call the screening room a boutique movie experience. Friendly staff. Comfy theatres. Fresh butter for your popcorn. They serve alcohol now too. Buy a membership and save on admission.

So happy that The Screening Room is gaining such a following. Great experience...feels like stepping back in time but with current technology. Super friendly, personal service. Bravo.

  • Helena Cheu

The staff are super friendly and nice. The popcorn is great (and not over priced). The seats are comfortable and they are taking good covid-related precautions. We had a lovely date!

  • Wendy Kelly

Great little gem in the heart of Kingston. I always check out what is playing when I’m in Kingston. If you love documentaries you will love the screening room. I’m a doc nerd …

  • Cody O'Neil

Such a great business to have downtown. Shows indie, foreign and award winning films. Screen sizes are smaller but still makes a great experience. Snacks are actually affordable!!!!

  • Lori Forrester

We saw Banshees of Inisherin. A little bit of unexpected gore and the storyline was a little hard to follow but definitely worth the effort to understand what the movie is about.

  • Ted Doleman

Loved it so much a helped buy the new projector. Popcorn was great, the feel of the theater was old school and the seats were good. Some films o ly come here and I will be back.
