A classic store of its kind, this bookshop has served the gay community and the local area since the 1980s. There is always a great window display at the entrance and a welcome from the staff. Les has owned the Bookshop for many years and he and his staff are very knowledgeable about books. They can help with a selection or will order a book in if they don’t have it. The atmosphere is peaceful and easy. The range of titles is fantastic from classics to gay and lesbian fiction. There is also a strong range of factual books covering sex, relationships and psychology. Finally there are beautiful volumes of photographs of male nudes from the sweet to the sexy. I drop in here just to browse and relax. But I usually end buying a book too ! Highly recommended to all book lovers.

Was in the need for a few particular books and found them all in stock and ready to ship at this beautiful little treasure trove. The staff (Noel) were so helpful in getting all of the items out to me very quickly and sourcing some other books that I also needed. It really was such a lesson on the level of skill that you get when buying from an actual bookshop and wonderful to support them and a local business at that. I know everyone who shops here will get what they need and will be very happy with the wonderful service they offer.

Very nice bookstore. Lots of choice. Stock DVDs too. Very nice, polite owner or store manger. There's a big choice of gay and literature but what was really standout for me was the book of sarcastic quotes by women on men and freedom. The books are very witty, sometimes catty and very well illustrated and designed. They make a great gift for someone who may have done you a favour. The store is offbeat and that's what I like about it, personally.

I had the pleasure of attending a book signing at The Bookshop to get Maggie Kirkpatrick signed autobiography. I regularly drop by the Bookshop for new things to read and I have always found the friendly and extremely knowledgeable about their stock. It specialises in LGBTI books but also has a wide variety of eclectic books and movie. Definitely pay a visit to The Bookshop Darlinghurst as you will not be disappointed.

I visit the Darlinghurst Bookshop at least once a month. It’s a charming local bookshop that just happens to have the largest selection of LGBTQI books in Sydney. The staff are friendly and have recommended some great books to me over the years. They also have great book signing events and special deals. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend visiting.

Excellent service from the same man the past 2 Sundays. I'm not familiar with the store setup and didn't really have time to search for what I needed so I just asked him when I walked in, on both occasions he didn't even have to look them up, he knew were they were and went straight to them. Very impressive. Nice guy - I would definitely go back.

This bookshop is one of the best parts of living in (or visiting) Sydney. Whether you go there for something in particular or just to browse, the team there are friendly and helpful. I especially treasure the extensive collection of Queer history books and niche titles. I hope this shop is around for many future generations to enjoy!

  • Bridgette Crowley

Absolutely amazing experience here. Shop attendant (apologies, not sure if it was the owner!) was exceedingly friendly and helpful. Came in looking for a book and he found it right away. He even gave me some info about a live action version being held down the road. 11/10, will definitely be coming back for future book needs!

It's been around for decades and this gay bookshop is still thriving thanks to a loyal clientele, smart buying and ultra nice staff. Theses such a nice feeling to browse through a book shop that's crammed to the rafters I'm this day and age. They do the occasional book launch too.

My gosh, Noel really knew his stuff. He provided me with countless suggestions and was so easy to talk to. What amazing service! This shop is run with such care and love. I had a beautiful time here and I can’t wait to come back to buy books for myself and the people I love!

A great bookstore with an amazing selection of LGBTI books, board games, cards and other kitsch items. The owner is friendly and had some great recommendations for my friend and I. PS you can also check out their online store as there's free delivery for orders over $75.

  • Jeffrey Davie

The Bookshop is a nice size for browsing books, videos & other reading material, that caters mainly for LGBTI. No X material. The staff are very friendly & helpful. Also do mail service if ordering online. They also have special events like meet the author nights.

I walked in the other day and was pleasantly surprised on how friendly and willing to help the staff was. I had no idea what I was looking for, but by just asking a few questions, he was able to point me in the right direction and find the gift I was looking for.

One of my favourite bookshops in Sydney. They have a huge selection of books and I always struggle to choose only a few to buy. Luckily, they have very knowledgeable staff who can recommend good books to you. 10/10 would recommend this shop to any bookworms.

Easily the largest offer of queer books in Sydney, if not Australia. 40 years+ operating this gem of Oxford street. Pleasant service, up for a chat and equally kind to let you browse as long as you need. Can’t recommend this shop enough.
