What a great idea for a Birthday Party! Located right near the Kinsmen Rec Centre, the John Walter Museum has three houses that were built over a hundred years ago by John Walter himself. The smallest house, which is the oldest of the three is an open room where the kids can do crafts. The house beside it was the second house John Walter built, the kids made butter and scones there. And the third house, which is the largest, is beautifully decorated with antique furnishings; this is where the birthday party was. The guide, Anna, is very knowledgeable about the museum and was wonderful with the children. The museum offers free tours every Sunday, except for the winter months.
The John Walter Museum is located right in the heart of Edmonton’s river valley in Kinsmen Park. The site interprets the life of John Walter and the Strathcona community of Walterdale from 1875 to 1920. Our facility offers a variety of experiences ranging from free self guided tours to large community events that celebrate historical activities. The park has walking and biking trails, picnic sites, a playground, an outdoor pool and the Kinsmen recreation centre. Spend a day with us and experience life in Walterdale. John Walter Museum is open and free to the public every Sunday (March through November) and Saturdays (July through September) from 1-4pm.
This is the first time visiting the John Walter Museum and area since moving to Edmonton 7+ years ago. I am glad that I could take some time, and enjoy walking through some of Edmonton's original historical sites on a sunny winter's day. Once the Museum opens up I would definitely take in a tour so I can learn about some history of Edmonton through John Walter in the past. I greatly appreciate the effort people have put into helping preserve these historical landmarks.
This area of the city is truly a gem. If I want to go exploring near the river valley, I almost always start here at John Walters. I like looking at the old buildings and reading about the history of the area posted around. It connects to the entire river valley trail system with access to basically all the bridges and fun architecture in the area. This area is one of my favorites in the city.

Had an opportunity to join my daughters school for a field trip and it was great! Look forward to going back when my kids are older and will better appreciate more of the history/story of John Walter but for the bit that discussed and relevant questions asked the kids had a great time and I did as well :)
I have not gone inside the museum yet. Very good place for hiking and takes pictures around, there's are good natural views.

Out of the way nice little museum of old houses at the Kinsmen. Some interesting history about Edmonton. Free homemade baking while you wait. Tours run at regular times for just a few dollars.
It's never open when I'm there, whether it's spring, summer, or fall. The city should really just move these into Fort Edmonton Park where at least they're staffed and maintained.
It's a slice of Edmonton history you can experience any time. It's a feel good tucked away park and museum. It's a great place to catch local music acts.
We had a great family day. Volunteers were knowledgeable and friendly. Kids loved making real lemonade and picking the fresh mint (not always offered).
My daughter was invited to a birthday party there. She had a blast making cupcakes, painting her own little pot and playing dress up. Very cool place!
one of my favourite places to watch the sun rise

It’s alright nothing like Fort Edmonton Park! The park next door was pretty cool until they took the huge slide out of the hill...
