I have always been wanting to visit this newer coffee shop. Today I finally got a chance to try it half an hour before they closed. It was a quiet afternoon. A customer was sitting there, enjoying his coffee beverage and working on this laptop. A barista (or owner?) was working at the coffee shop. The barista was very friendly. I was kind of bad that I asked him a bunch of questions about the beverages on the menus. LOL he was polite to explain to me. At the end I picked a latte because I saw a lot of reviews and photos here were a cup of latte! He quickly made one for me. I took a photo of it and told him that I wrote reviews for Yelp, so I found this coffee shop. I had a first sip of latte. OHH... MANN.... it was so good!!! I asked for regular milk just like how I ordered latte at other coffee shops. This one was so good that it tasted so fresh. I could smell the fragrance of coffee from the cup. Each sip made me happy and satisfied for the day! LOL I don't know how to describe in any other words. It just tasted so different from others. You just come here and try it yourself! I was trying to order their burnt cheesecake as it was very popular. Unfortunately, the stove was broken. The coffee shop is waiting to fix it, so they can bake again. The barista asked me to come back in late September. The stove should be fixed and they would back and have a bunch of new pastries. I told the barista that I would DEFINITELY come back and try other coffee/tea beverages and must try their burnt cheesecake. I look forward to late September!! This coffee shop is right on East Hastings and one block west from Nanaimo Street. If you are lucky, you can find parking on East Hastings. You may have to pay for street parking though, but you can drive and park in the residential area and walk to the coffee shop.

My go-to when I'm craving a fresh + filling sandwich during the workday. Every time I've ordered their ham + cheese sandwich, it is toasted to perfection (with in-house bread!), the perfect amount of mayo + mustard, and fresh + vibrant ingredients. Honestly the best sandwich I've had in Vancouver to date. I keep meaning to try their other sandwiches (e.g. roast beef, spinach + feta + turkey, avocado goddess), but the ham + cheese is so good it's hard to sway away. The baked goods & croissants are gorgeous as well. They offer staples like chocolate or butter croissants or unique combos like a Matcha or Earl Grey croissant, or cream cheese + banana muffin (YES). Can't recommend this place enough, the perfect lunch stop!

We came by early on Monday and baked goods weren't ready yet, so we took a stroll and came back. So glad we did because the pastries were delicious and the folks running the store are very nice and smiley :) We got (and would recommend) the cinnamon roll and spinach and cheese pita, but I think any of their pastries would be wonderful. The pita was actually still warm from the oven, which was nice. The "cinnamon roll" is not your typical thick heavy cinnamon roll; it's a croissant that's rolled into a spiral, and it was pleasantly not too sweet but was flaky (just like you'd want from a well-made croissant) and just slightly sticky (crunchy and chewy from the sugar). Prices are also very fair ($3-6 for a pastry). Definitely recommended you come swing by!

Great vibes, there’s computer campers but it doesn’t kill it, still free tables available. Service is great, drip coffee is good and flat white was made to perfection (with oat milk). Pastries looked REALLY good, I had the vegan chocolate chip cookies and they were perfect with coffee. But what made me the happiest is that they sell Foonie cards which is an artist that I love love and always support. She moved to Montréal and it’s getting harder to find her cards around town (I personally like to touch the cards before I buy them, but you can find her on Etsy). There’s other cute merchandise, it’s a nice space overall.

Penny Royal is one of the best coffee shops along Hastings! It's truly a hidden gem. I've come here quite a few times to work/study and the staff is always so accommodating. They have wonderful coffee and a variety of pastries and sandwiches as well! The best part is that they're dog friendly and have dog treats too. They also have a cute rewards program and I often get discounts/promotions. My dog, Koda, has pretty bad anxiety and we were trying new medication for him. We needed to put him in a stimulating environment to "test" out the new medication and I am so thankful for Penny Royal. Before the medication he would cry and be scared to enter, but after, he's able to lay down and hang out while I work!

A cute little cafe that is full of surprises! The pastries were all made in house which pretty much all of them were great!! Croissant was super flakey and delicious, the honey jasmine donut was spot on, it's not overly sweet so you won't feel sick afterwards. Creamcheese chocolate muffin was great too! A little dry inside but with the creamcheese it was a great moist factor. The store also sells some local artists' cards/ stickers, it's always amazing to see cafes that support locals!

Major 5 stars for their ultra flaky croissants! There is a full bakery in the back so it appears they bake their pastries fresh daily, yum! I couldn’t help myself so I ordered a butter croissant, almond croissant and strawberry jelly donut. The almond croissant has a creamy runny condensed milk almond filling; so delicious but also a tad too sweet. The donut was quite dense, still good, but my pick would hands down be the croissants! Also ordered a cappuccino, which were average. I would say come for the coffee but stay for the croissants!! Definitely recommended

A place of refuge on an otherwise busy street. Pennyroyal is a welcomed addition to the community and their commitment to quality of their beans, food, and baked goods, has me wanting to come back often. The service is very gentle and down to earth. The decor is soft and unobtrusive; functional yet relaxing. The food options and coffee complement each other well, removing the need for a busy menu board. Too bad they open later than my usual morning coffee runs. I'll still pop by every lazy day, just for their pour over coffee.

The latte was really good with a very slight sweetness from the milk and no bitterness from the coffee. I also got an almond croissant, matcha croissant, lemon cake, and matcha cream cheese cupcake. All were good and out of the 4 I would come back for the lemon cake. It was really good. The croissants, I wish they were more flaky, and the almond croissant filling I was lukewarm on.

Popped into Pennyroyal in a nice, warm Saturday afternoon and the ambience was just as dedicated and decent as the coffee shop's name sounds. I was thrilled to hear the owner, Bin, who has been a proud coffee connoisseur, to share about his passion for coffee and stories behind his cafe. Really impressed by how Pennyroyal had tried every effort to make a coffee break at the store as safe as it can be even under this difficult circumstance. Definitely recommend their Latte and Elderberry Tea!

What a great little coffee shop! Cozy atmosphere, friendly service and most importantly, great coffee and food! I tried their latte and avocado sandwich and both were delicious. They had a great assortment of pastries on display that looked so fresh and yummy, I know I have to go back. This coffee shop is great for coffee dates and people watching if you choose to sit by the bar facing out the window. Hope you enjoy your visit here as much as I did.

This place, with a small space did manage to pull up a good amount of crowd, which of course because of the coffee and bakery items. Tried the Iced latte and chocolate croissant (recommended by them) and I actually it. The half an hour I spent there was quite relaxing. Simple, wooden aesthetic, definitely one to try if you're into exploring local coffee shops.

There are a few really good coffee places along this area of East Van. This place creates a cozy atmosphere accompanied by creamy cappuccinos. Their coffee might edge out the surrounding coffee shops in their consistently good coffees. It is a small place, but if you find a nice spot, it is a great place to study or read with a cup in hand. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Ordered from here a few times and am always blown away by how fresh and tasty the drinks are :) The London fog that I ordered this morning was still piping hot and the best I’ve had in the lower mainland! Americano was hot and bold as well. Will definitely stop in to try some of the fresh pastries in the shop one of these days. Love the logo/branding too

  • Hamed Soltani

Great coffee and chocolate croissant. The coffee was very good quality, a bit sour after taste, which comes with a good quality Arabica beans usually, and it perfectly complemented the sweetness of the chocolate croissant. I also got the spinach pita, even though it wasn't pita, but that's what it was called and it was very fresh and very tasty.

  • Zachary Cox

Very well crafted coffee, delicious brunch options and home baked cakes. Owners are very passionate about what they put forward and are constantly evolving the offering. They've raised the bar for quality and atmosphere in the area without raising the prices. Support local independent and check them out. My new local, and should be yours too.

Coffee was good. Dessert was good. However, i paid with cash, but the cashier didn't give me the correct change. Although it was only a difference of one dollar, it still didn't feel good. (I still gave a tip pretending not to notice). I hope it was just a simple mistake.

It might not seam like a bakery, but their baked goods are spectacular! I was eating a delicious chocolate croissant, when my partner had a bit and said, no that's London Fog. Lol, that's way tastier! No wonder I liked it so much. But their chocolate ones are good to.

The atmosphere, music, and coffee is honestly a vibe. Pennyroyal is a super nice environment for being productive and studying, but can also suit as a place to relax and de-stress after a long day. The staff are super friendly, coffee enthusiasts that care deeply about their products.

Ordered two oat lattes, one with vanilla. The coffee is a bit weak. Order an extra shot if you need it. The breakfast sandwich is delicious and the baked goods here are really tasty. They even sell brioche donuts! Kind and friendly service to top it off. I'll be visiting again! More

Yes, another "premium" coffee shop, but the premium actually translates to quality. Had myself a very flavorful fresh made pour-over with your choice of bean and avocado toast on great bread with a perfectly poached egg. These guys know what they're doing.
