Fish and chips were once as reliable as good coffee in Australia..These days it is very much hit and miss..Sadly this establishment was a huge miss!! The sooner proprietors of fish and chips stop using Basa as their basic fish the better..It is a fresh water farmed fish from Thailand which is tasteless and insipid and cannot withstand being deep fried so it goes mushy and is quite revolting..The batter used by Barnacles didn't help..The calamari tasted toxic, and my wife felt like throwing up immediately after eating one ring. The yellow chips were totally tasteless...Why some fish and chip shops use some kind of yellow food dye on their chips is quite beyond me..We ended up throwing away the bulk of this meal as it was totally inedible. This is a massive waste of food and money. The standard of fish and chips now in Sydney is appalling...

I don’t usually jump on and rank but after a night on the toilet I think it’s fair. Unfortunately we spent $40 on two pieces of fish, chips and calamari. The crumbed piece was not crumb.. the Fish was thick, oily and undercooked in the middle. After feeling burnt on the price we ate half of it and binned the rest. Tasteless. The calamari was not up to scratch but was the best out of the lot. A small pot of sauce was $3. To top it all off when ordering we were barked at, as were the other customers. More research into local fish shops and the quality would be beneficial for the success of this business.

This was a good place once upon a time, not anymore. We ordered John Dory which had no flavour and cooking time was unusually long even though there was no queue in the shop when we ordered. Not a great experience. I hope management make some changes soon because it's a great location with limited options for fish and chips closeby.

It looked like a very popular place with a long queue of people. We waited nearly 30mins for the food that was ok as they're busy. The battered John Dory fish $15 was crispy but lacked flavour, while the grilled snapper $15 was good. Unfortunately the baby octopus pack $18 was rather awful, it was most bland with half of the octopus not edible as they're burnt and dry. The chips were not good either tasted old. I would avoid this place.

Get fried fish and chips. They are very good and the fish especially has extra tasty flavour. I’ve ordered fried fish and chips +calamari +prawns and the fried fish was the clear winner. It tasted better than the average fried fish. Calamari and prawns were ok but I had better in Sydney The service was fast and efficient and for these reasons, I give this place 3 bears

I got calamari and chips today and although it was a bit pricey and the chips were bright yellow from dirty oil, it was edible. I got octopus and chips and for $18, I thought there would be more chips. The service was great and there is outdoor seating available.

Ordered the family pack, reasonably priced, portion size is good. Calamari and prawn cutlets were fine. Unfortunately the rest is was pretty bad, grilled fish tasted like a mouthful of salt but barely any salt on the chips? Chicken nuggets were undercooked, still wet on the inside, batter on the fish was a bit thick and pretty oily. Would give it a pass next time.

Customer service was great, the fish was yummy But the fries were not. I am obsessed with fries, please change the oil regularly as it will make a huge difference in taste :)

Staff are smiley and friendly, fish tastes nice and fresh, calamari was great, portion sizes are ample. The vinegar could be better (malt) but I am used to english fish and chips so it could just be me. If you're a fellow brit, don't expect it to be a traditional chippy like back home. Embrace the aussieness and you'll enjoy it. No curry sauce option so go for mayo with the chips.

Fish was below average. Think it’s precooked so it has no texture when it’s battered and fried. It’s just mushy - all 4 servings of fish were the same. Fish should come away in flakes but it’s just… mush. Chips were good, service was friendly, but won’t be coming back if that’s the way fish is done here.

I got the fish, grilled, and was basa with chips, $12. Reasonable wait as they cook to order. Plentiful portion, you won't go away hungry. The fish was a little uncooked to my likely but I like things nearly well done. Probably from a Chefs point of view, perfect lol. I have visited this shop before and would go again

The food isn't bad, it's actually quite good. Problem is there's only a handful of things on the menu and they're pretty expensive for a fish and chip shop. If they only did one thing and expanded their menu to include the stuff a normal fish and chip shop is expected to have then I'd definitely rate them higher.

Seafood on the beach what else could you want. Octopus were good, naybe some flavour. Could used some more lemon and the fries portion was quiet small considering the price paid.

Fish had a bad smell and did not taste like barramundi as ordered and chips were low quality. The ‘Greek salad‘ which was an extra $5.50 came unmixed, mostly iceberg lettuce with a few sliced bland olives on top, 2 slices of tomato and a teaspoon of feta. This place would fold if it wasn’t next to the beach.

The food is brilliant. The service is great. The cues can be quite long sometimes because of all this, but well worth the wait. Prices are more than reasonable. Only flaw is that the premises are run down and needs refurbishment. That's ok though, your not going to live there. Enjoy the food.

Believe new owners who have changed the produce for cheaper quality items like the obviously fake + frozen calamari. Worst ever chips; no crunch, no salt, no flavour! Prefer to eat a raw potato After living here locally 5+ years Never plan re turn & telling every one i know to avoid it…

Order a $13 calamari pack had to pay $3 for sauce who charges $3 for sauce also got 8 calamari rings and two handful of chips asked for chicken salt got no salt. $16 later and have never been more disappointed. What a rip off and the food was under cooked and the staff was rude.

  • Hadezz

Amazing fish and chips, the fish tastes fresh, the batter is crispy and the perfect consistency, not oily at all, big tub of tomato sauce and heaps of chips for the price. Best ive had in Aussie so far ❤️

I popped in here (just on a walk by) and decided to get some chips and calamari and I can honestly say....the best I've had from ANY Maroubra takeaway shop in the longest time. A friend got the burger which looked (and apparently tasted) sensational. I'll be back for sure.

  • Frank Andersen

Best fish and chips in Maroubra Beach. Despite not being right on the beach it's easily found. Just look for the line up outside the shop. Fresh fish and perfect chips at reasonable prices. Possible to eat outside the shop or take with you to the beach to enjoy.

"Basa" or Catfish imported from fish farms in Cambodia and chips: The fish was terrible, the chips were so overcooked in old oil they were just as inedible. Much better spots around the east.

The battered fish, potato fritters and squid rings were awesome!!! The chips need some work though. They were very floury and not crispy. Thank you.

Not the best to be honest. Crumbed calamari was probably the best thing there. Grilled Baby Octupus had zero flavour, couldn't eat it. Grilled fish was mediocre.

Absolutely love this place. GF Chips, Chicken Salt, Grilled Calamari And awesome staff. You won’t be disappointed! Keep up the great work. We appreciate you so much …

  • Ash Miller

Solid four stars. Fresh grilled fish, well cooked and salted chips. Service was good too. The place needs more outdoor sitting and not sure how fish and hamburgers go together :)

  • Mona Shim

Ordered two grilled Barramundi with chips. Chips were alright but the fish was absolutely foul. It tasted like it was marinated in swamp water. Would never go there again

  • Nathan Byrne

Good food, very reasonably priced. Calamari was delicious, had a great crunchy coating. Burger was pretty good. Chips were nice and crunchy.
